The Kia Carens is a popular car on our roads, and its popularity has enabled a new sales record for the MPV. In just 36 months, it has crossed 2 lakh unit sales, which is a result of its well-equipped package and value-for-money proposition.
Kia has revealed that the petrol variants constitute the majority (58%) of sales, while the diesel variants take up the remaining share. 68% of the buyers opt for the manual variants. Interestingly, 28% of people picked the variants with sunroof, and 24% opted for the top-spec variants. Most buyers (95%) have chosen the 7-seater variant.
Let’s take a look at what makes Carens so popular and a popular choice:
The most popular MPV in India is still the Toyota Innova, and competing with the Japanese MPV is not an easy task. However, Kia has priced the Carens so well that it undercuts the Innova by a fair margin. Prices for the Carens range between Rs 10.59 lakh and Rs 19.69 lakh (ex-showroom), which is a good price range for what the Carens offers.
While it is more expensive than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6, it also offers much more in terms of features and powertrain options when compared with the two.
The Carens is around 4.5 metres long, which gives it a good road presence, and it feels like a big car. With 2780 mm of wheelbase, it provides a spacious cabin. Its three-row layout allows buyers to opt from 6 and 7-seater configurations. So, for larger families with 6 to 7 members, it becomes a compelling option.
The Carens is not as loaded as the Seltos but still offers plenty of amenities which take care of your needs and requirements. The top ones include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a 10.1-inch rear seat entertainment system, ventilated front seats, 64-colour ambient lighting, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, a single-pane sunroof, wireless phone charger, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push button start.
It also comprises a decent safety net which includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, a reverse parking camera with sensors, hill hold assist and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
There is something for everyone. The Carens can be opted for in as many as five variants: Premium, Prestige, Prestige Plus, Luxury Plus and X-Line. The wide range of variants gives buyers the option to choose the trim that best fits their budget and requirements.
Kia offers the Carens in eight hues: Imperial Blue, Xclusive Matte Graphite, Sparkling Silver, Intense Red, Glacier White Pearl, Clear White, Gravity Grey, and Aurora Black Pearl.
Kia retails the Carens with three engines to choose from and multiple transmission options as well. For starters, it gets the basic 115 PS 1.5-litre NA petrol engine, which is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission only. You also get a more potent 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine which makes 160 PS of power and can be mated to either a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT. For those who intend to travel longer distances on a frequent basis, there is also a 116 PS 1.5-litre diesel engine which can be opted for with either a 6-speed manual, or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
With the Carens, Kia has offered buyers plenty to choose from, including multiple variants, colours and powertrains. With so many options to choose from, it caters to different sets of buyers and matches with their exact preferences and needs.
It is important to note that a facelifted model of the Carens will also be introduced this year itself and will retail alongside the current version. It is expected to be offered with plenty of premium features such as a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, rear ventilated seats, a dual-zone climate control control and level-2 ADAS. Moreover, the Carens EV is also set to be launched in the second half of 2025. For more details about it, head over to this story.
