Google has announced one of the biggest updates yet for Android Auto, bringing a redesigned interface, YouTube video support, immersive navigation and deeper Gemini AI integration to compatible cars.
The update is aimed at making Android Auto feel more modern, customizable and better suited to the increasingly varied infotainment displays seen in newer cars. Google says the new experience will roll out gradually throughout 2026.
Here’s everything you need to know about the next-generation Android Auto experience:
Android Auto Will Finally Support YouTube Videos
One of the biggest highlights of the update is native video playback support inside Android Auto.
For the first time, users will be able to watch videos from apps like YouTube directly on their car’s infotainment screen, although this feature will only work when the vehicle is parked or charging.

Google says the system uses data from both the smartphone and the vehicle itself, including speed, selected gear and GPS signals, to determine whether the car is stationary.
Interestingly, once the vehicle starts moving, Android Auto will automatically switch the video into audio-only mode instead of abruptly stopping playback. This could be especially useful for podcasts and long-form video content.
The feature will first roll out on supported cars from brands including:
- BMW
- Ford
- Hyundai
- Kia
- Mahindra
- Mercedes-Benz
- Skoda
- Tata Motors
- Volvo
New Interface Designed For Modern Screens
Google has also redesigned Android Auto’s interface to better adapt to unusual infotainment screen shapes and sizes.
Whether it’s a wide ultrawide display, a circular MINI-style screen, or even angled layouts like some BMW systems, Android Auto will now scale more naturally across different form factors.

The updated interface also adopts Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language with smoother animations, updated fonts and more visual personalisation options.
Users will additionally be able to add widgets directly onto the home screen, including:
-
Weather information
-
Shortcut contacts
-
Garage door controls
-
Music shortcuts
-
Navigation-related widgets
This should make Android Auto feel much more customisable than before.
Google Maps is getting a big upgrade, too
Another major update is Immersive Navigation for Google Maps.
Google says this is the biggest update to Maps in over a decade. The navigation screen will now show more detailed 3D visuals, including buildings, terrain, overpasses, lanes, traffic lights and stop signs.

For cars with Google Built-In, Maps will become even more advanced with live lane guidance that can analyse roads using the car’s front-facing cameras.
This feature aims to make highway lane changes and exits feel easier and more intuitive while driving, in turn reducing accidents.
Gemini AI Will Become A Bigger Part Of Android Auto
Google’s Gemini AI assistant is also set to play a much larger role in Android Auto going forward.
Gemini will be capable of drafting replies, understanding contextual requests, and even helping complete tasks while driving.
One example Google shared involves Gemini automatically understanding a friend asking for an address through text messages and then suggesting the correct response using information from your messages, emails or calendar.
Drivers will also be able to place food orders using Gemini. Google specifically mentioned DoorDash integration in the USA as one of the first examples. Will Swiggy and Zomato be integrated for India?
For cars with Google Built-In, Gemini will additionally answer vehicle-specific questions, such as warning light explanations or whether a large object might fit inside the boot.
Android Auto Will Also Improve Entertainment
Apart from video playback, Google is also upgrading the in-car entertainment experience.
Supported cars and apps will soon offer Dolby Atmos spatial audio support, while apps like YouTube Music and Spotify are getting redesigned interfaces for easier use while driving.
Google says modern cars with larger screens and premium audio systems are increasingly being treated like personal entertainment spaces while parked or charging, which explains the push towards richer media experiences.
ZigSays…
This update feels like a pretty significant leap forward for Android Auto.
Until now, most infotainment updates have focused on making interfaces cleaner or slightly faster. But this overhaul feels much bigger because it changes the way Android Auto can actually be used inside modern cars.
The addition of parked video playback alone is likely to be hugely popular, especially in EVs where owners spend more time waiting while charging. And features like immersive navigation and Gemini integration make the system feel far more futuristic than before.
What’s particularly interesting for India is the inclusion of brands like Mahindra and Tata in the first rollout list. That means these features may arrive on locally sold cars much sooner than expected.
And honestly, all car screens these days are getting larger by the day; this feels less like a software update and more like the beginning of a proper in-car digital ecosystem.
