BYD took the wraps off its smallest offering, the Seagull, at the ongoing Auto Shanghai 2023

This sharp looking electric hatchback you are seeing in this article is the new BYD Seagull. It broke cover at the ongoing Auto Shanghai 2023 and is BYD’s smallest electric vehicle yet. Reportedly, this EV will go on sale in the Chinese market first before making its way to other markets.

With electric cars booming in the Indian space and BYD receiving a positive response for the Atto 3 SUV, e6 MPV and upcoming Seal sedan, we do hope the Seagull is being considered for India.

First things first, the Seagull looks cool, especially in this bright yellow shade. The LED headlamps on top with the aggressively styled bumper gives the front end a sporty appearance. In profile, the hatch has a tall-boy silhouette which is reminiscent of the Chevy Beat hatchback, while the large alloys give it a proportionate stance. Connected tail lamps with a mix of black and body-coloured elements round off the rear end.

The interior design is typical BYD, with plenty of quirky design touches and curves. In typical BYD fashion, similar to the Atto 3, it gets a large floating touchscreen infotainment system that can be swivelled to either portrait or landscape mode. Apart from that, it gets a small digital driver’s display and a three-spoke steering wheel, again both similar to the Atto 3.

Technical specifications of the Seagull are yet to be determined. But reports suggest that the Seagull could get two powertrain options: Standard and Long Range. The former could get a 74PS e-motor, paired with a 30kWh battery, to deliver 305km. On the other hand, the top model is likely to feature a 100PS e-motor, teamed with a 38kWh battery, to deliver 405km.

As mentioned above, the Seagull, with its sporty looks, upmarket cabin and reasonable specifications would make for a good fit for the Indian market. If brought here, it will serve as a premium alternative to models such as the Tata Tiago EV, MG Comet EV and Citroen eC3.
