The electronics giant aims to utilise Honda’s familiarity with automotive production and regulations for the upcoming EVs

  • The alliance company will be formed later this year.

  • Honda and Sony will co-develop the new EVs.

  • They will be produced at Honda’s EV manufacturing facilities.

  • First Sony-Honda EV coming in 2025.

Japanese companies Honda and Sony will soon join hands to form a new alliance under which they’ll co-develop electric vehicles (EVs) for global markets. Sony is already an aspiring carmaker with two models in the works, the Sony Vision 01 sedan and the Vision 02 SUV. The first electric car built under the new alliance is expected to be launched in 2025.

Sony and Honda have taken the first step towards the new alliance by signing a memorandum of understanding. Later this year, the two companies expect to establish a new company together. They will also get in a joint venture agreement and a joint development agreement. In other words, Sony and Honda will co-develop the EVs, the first of which will be produced at one of Honda’s electric car manufacturing facilities.

“Although Sony and Honda are companies that share many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of technological expertise are very different,” says Toshihiro Mibe, Director and CEO of Honda Motor Co. He says that the new alliance company will be able to take advantage of “Honda’s cutting-edge technology and know-how in relation to the environment and safety, while aligning the technological assets of both companies.”

Sony also plans to develop a new mobility service platform for commercial usage of the upcoming EV models. The electronics giant’s growth as a carmaker and its alliance with a mainstream carmaker could be a good sign for the Indian EV market, but we’ll have to wait for official announcements in the coming years to see how Sony and its new alliance with Honda will expand their EV sales globally.
