The Toyota Hyryder will become the first compact SUV in India to get factory-fitted CNG. Prices of the SUV, which will be offered in mid-spec S and G trims, are yet to be announced. However, if you’re interested in this alternative fuel option, bookings for the CNG variants have commenced across the country. They are expected to be priced at a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over their respective petrol-only counterparts.

The Toyota Hyryder gets two engine options, a standard 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol unit and a 1.5-litre strong-hybrid. The CNG option will only be available with the standard 1.5-litre petrol unit, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Although the Hyryder is offered with a 6-speed automatic and also gets an all-wheel drive variant, CNG is exclusive to the manual transmission, front-wheel drive S and G models.

The Suzuki-developed powertrain is tuned for 103PS and 137Nm in petrol-only model, but expect the CNG version’s output to be around 87PS, similar to the CNG-powered Maruti Ertiga, XL6 and Brezza. The engine already offers a stellar fuel economy on petrol at  21.12kmpl (claimed), so it should be efficient in CNG mode as well. For reference, the XL6 CNG returns 26.32km/kg.

The Toyota Hyryder’s CNG variants are expected to command a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the standard petrol-only variants. For reference, the equivalent S MT trim sets you back by Rs 12.28 lakh, while the more feature loaded G trim costs Rs 14.34 lakh (all price ex-showroom Delhi). It will be the first CNG-powered SUV in its segment which consists of stalwarts such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun and Maruti Grand Vitara.
