The OGs know that a scooter is not just a scooter, but a ride and a true style statement, an extension of your attractive personality. Keeping that in mind, I found the new Hero Xoom 110 Combat Edition to be the ultimate style statement. I took the scooter on a ride in the urban jungle and boy, here’s what I think.
The Hero Xoom 110 always had a unique design and styling in the segment, and not just me, I am sure that a lot of youngsters found the scooter to be really attractive. Positioned as a sporty scooter, the Xoom 110 has an aggressive design with sharp body panels on the front, side and even the rear. At first glance, it does not strike as a 110cc scooter, instead, it gives the appeal of something much bigger in capacity. And sure enough, while I was riding the Xoom 110 Combat Edition around town, I did catch a lot of attention from the onlookers thanks to its unique fighter jet inspired livery.
With a solid Grey colour scheme as the backdrop on the body of the scooter, the fluorescent yellow and white stickering job increases the sporty quotient of the Xoom 110. Honestly, the combination of grey and green is something that I find very desirable. I mean, look at it under the sun on a bright day, or under the street lights at night, the Xoom 110 Combat Edition impresses with its styling at all times. The most fascinating bit is that the stripes on the side panels are inspired by fighter jets, doesn’t that make it even more badass?
Over the Xoom 110 ZX, the Combat Edition presents an even fresher appeal to the sporty silhouette. One of the coolest (and practical) bits on the Xoom 110 has to be the split cubby hole on the front apron. It looks good and is very practical too for someone as tall as me (6’2) with my long legs, but let me get to that a little later.
In the case of a 110cc scooter, you wouldn’t expect a lot of punch from the engine, but the Xoom 110’s XTEC Engine positively surprises me. The 8PS and 8.7Nm is spread out well, and even from the get-go, you feel the torque. Whenever I got on the scooter, I would just twist the throttle, and go in the sporty zone with a positive and rather exciting pull from the engine.
In addition to that, the torque is very well present in the higher rev band too, which really helped me in making quick overtakes in city traffic. You know you very well need that zing to get out of traffic or sticky situations. Also, while there is enough power to ride in the urban jungle, the Xoom 110 does not shy away from some highway action either, and I could very comfortably sit at 80kmph.
Quite interestingly, the Xoom 110 is one of the quickest scooters in the segment. Want to know something cooler? Its acceleration times are as quick as a 125cc scooter. It does 0-40kmph in 4.20 seconds and 0-60kmph in 9.35 seconds (claimed). That does sound like my money’s worth for a sporty scooter.
While the performance and the looks are sporty, the comfort has a different approach. The ergonomics on the Xoom 110 Combat Edition is neutral, upright and comfortable for different kinds of riders. Thanks to the long and wide seat, I could find comfort on the seat, that too with a pillion at the back.
As I mentioned earlier, the cubby holes are a life (knee) saver for tall people. It is placed lower, closer to the floorboard. Thanks to this I had a lot of space to “store” my knees at the front, without getting it stuck between the storage space or the handlebar. And there’s a good amount of storage in the cubby holes as well, where I could keep my phone (conveniently being charged from the port right next to it), soda and umbrella quite easily.
Being the perfect candidate for the Urban Jungle, the Xoom 110 Combat Edition is quite agile and easy to flick around in the city and in traffic. And that is exactly what I was doing on my test runs, enjoying not getting stuck behind anybody. The light weight, sharp handling and 12-inch wheels shod with the wide 90/90 tyre up front and 100/80 tyre on the rear, combine to offer a riding experience that is both manoeuvrable through traffic and stable at higher speeds.
Brakes are where the Xoom 110 shines with a 190mm disc up front and a 130mm drum at the rear. I’ll tell you how. While leisurely riding on my way to office, a kid on a bicycle came out of nowhere and all I had to do was apply the brakes, and the scooter came to a halt without any drama whatsoever. It offers good bite and progression as it works efficiently to bring the scooter to a halt in a progressive and predictive manner.
Digital console, smartphone connectivity, start-stop tech (i3S) – the Hero Xoom 110 Combat Edition has it all. But there is one thing that no other scooter in the segment, or even in the segment above, features – cornering lights. I had all the bragging rights in my friends circle with this feature, as it is really the coolest, and not even the most sporty motorcycles get it!
The LCD console comes with Bluetooth connectivity, call & SMS alerts, an odometer, real time mileage indicator and a USB charging port are some other things that it already flaunts over its competitors. Lastly, with the i3s start stop system, the Xoom is able to deliver a whopping fuel efficiency of 63.8kmpl in the city and 50.6kmpl on the highway. I could ride all I want and not be burning a hole in my pocket because of the fuel costs.
With a price of Rs 80,967, the Hero Xoom 110 Combat Edition is just Rs 1,000 more expensive than the ZX variant of the scooter. For that premium, what you get is a really stylish scooter that offers reliable and peppy performance and keeps you comfortable throughout. The attention you get on the road is clearly an added bonus!
