Tata’s first premium hatchback to be launched on January 22

  • Tata unveiled the Altroz on December 3.
  • Two engines options - 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel unit.
  • The Altroz will be available in five variants: XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ (O).
  • Altroz’ rivals include the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and Toyota Glanza.

Tata’s first shot at the premium hatchback space, the Altroz, is all set to be launched on January 22. The launch date was revealed by Tata Motors CEO Guenter Butschek during an interview. The premium hatchback was unveiled on December 3, revealing all the details except for the price. We have also sampled the car and you can click on these blue words to read our first drive review of the Altroz. If you’re looking for more, head here for the out spec comparison and here for more insight on the different variants on offer.

Tata began accepting bookings for the Altroz on December 4 for a token amount of Rs 21,000. The Altroz also gets four customisation packs from the factory which can be configured and booked online (Rs 31,000). The hatchback is available in five variants: XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ (O).

One of the main highlights of the Altroz is its sharp styling with a shark nose-like front end and sharp design elements. Tata’s Impact 2.0 design language has impressed with a rather novel looking hatchback that is sure to stand out from the competition.

Tata is offering the Altroz with two BS6 compliant powertrain options. First up is the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated 3-cylinder  engine borrowed from the Tiago. This engine develops 89PS and 114Nm. The diesel is a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit, again borrowed from the Nexon. Output figures for the diesel stand at 90PS and 200Nm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed gearbox while we can expect a turbo-petrol+DCT combination in the near future.

The Altroz also packs enough kit to go against its entrenched competition. Some of the highlights include ambient lighting, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an 6-speaker Harman sound system, a coloured multi-info display (MID), cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic headlamps and wipers.

When launched, the Altroz will go up against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and Toyota Glanza. Although we’ll have to wait for the pricing till January 22, our guess is that the Altroz could retail from Rs 5.49 lakh to Rs 8.50 lakh (ex-showroom India).
