Expanding further on the success of the Kwid, Renault has launched the more powerful Kwid powered by a 1.0-litre engine at Rs 3.82 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The French manufacturer had first showcased the 1.0-litre variant at the 2016 Auto Expo in February. Bookings for the new Kwid have already started at authorised dealerships.

At first glance, the new Renault 1.0-litre Kwid looks almost identical to the current Kwid sold in the market. It’s on closer inspection that the few cosmetic changes are noticed, such as the two-tone grey-coloured OVRMs and the designer decals on the doors. The interiors of the 1.0-litre variant have not undergone any changes. It still features a dual-tone dashboard with a chrome-accentuated digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. The seat upholstery is done up in Champion Red while the centre and side aircon vents get chrome inserts.
The biggest change is under the hood: this variant of the hatchback is powered by a 999cc 3-cylinder DOHC engine that puts out 68PS of power and 91Nm of peak torque. Compared to the 0.8-litre engine the new 1.0-litre motor is 14PS more powerful and is 19Nm torqueier. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox transmitting power to the front wheels. An AMT option is soon expected to be introduced with this engine option. Renault claims that the 1.0-litre engine will return a fuel efficiency figure of 23kmpl. Other mechanical parts on the new variant will be shared with the current Kwid.
The 1.0-litre Kwid is available in the top-spec RXT and RXT (O) trims and comes with safety features like remote keyless entry and central locking, engine immobiliser and seat belts for front and rear passengers. Renault has equipped these variants of the Kwid with pro-sense front seat belt function, which is a segment first, and driver side airbag as an optional extra.
Competition-wise, in the 1.0-litre segment the Renault Kwid will compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, the Hyundai Eon and the Tata Tiago petrol.
