Ford is set to launch the EcoSport facelift in India this year. Other than the cosmetic updates, there will also be a new Dragon series petrol engine under the bonnet of the compact SUV. This new family of engines is more fuel efficient and, at the same time, more powerful than the existing 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. More importantly, Ford says that the Dragon series of engines will be able to meet the upcoming BS-VI norms easily with ‘some changes to the vehicle’.

The new 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated, 3-cylinder petrol engine for the EcoSport makes 123PS of maximum power, which makes it more powerful than the existing engine by 11PS, and just 2PS short of the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine. At 150Nm, torque output too has increased by 10Nm compared to the existing petrol engine. Ford says that the new engine is also 7 per cent more fuel efficient than the 4-cylinder unit which returns an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 18.88kmpl on the EcoSport. The new petrol engine will be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic.

The new 1.5-litre engine is made in India and will appear under the bonnet of the Aspire and the Figo as well. Ford says that the new engine will replace the 4-cylinder petrol engine on all cars. We can even expect this engine in different iterations in the future as Ford says that it can be downsized or upsized too. Globally, Ford’s Sanand facility in Gujarat is the first to manufacture this engine and it is already being exported from India.
