Ferrari’s new 849 channels the spirit of the ’80s Testarossa, with power the original could only dream of

Ferrari 849 Testarossa Revealed: A Radical Homage To An Icon highlights

Ferrari has pulled the covers off the 849 Testarossa, a car that pays tribute to one of Maranello’s most celebrated nameplates while pushing performance into uncharted territory. The original Testarossa, with its flat-12 cylinder engine, iconic side strakes, and wide stance, became a true symbol of the ’80s. The new 849 picks up that legacy and is set to succeed the SF90 Stradale as Ferrari’s flagship model.

Let’s dive into the details of how Ferrari has turned nostalgia into raw, modern power.

Design

One glance at the 849 and the Testarossa bloodline is unmistakable. It features a wide stance and razor-sharp wedge profile, but Ferrari has not simply recreated an ’80s silhouette. Every crease and vent has been rethought with modern aerodynamics in mind. It includes the carbon-fibre skin channels air across deep intakes and sculpted tunnels, not just for drama but for serious downforce.

The side intakes have been completely re-engineered into the doors, and they feed massive intercoolers borrowed from the F80. It also features aluminium panels so complex in shape that they took two years to perfect. At the rear, Ferrari draws inspiration from its ’70s prototype racers, with a split spoiler on either edge of the body. slim dual-piece LED tail lamps, a high-mounted exhaust, and a pronounced rear diffuser.

Interior

Inside the 849 Testarossa feels every bit as focused as its exterior suggests. The cabin sheds unnecessary luxuries in favour of a cockpit-like layout that puts the driver at the centre of everything. The dash draws inspiration from classic Ferraris with its clean, horizontal lines, but the instruments and displays are cutting-edge, offering crisp digital readouts wrapped in a retro-inspired design. Exposed carbon fibre, purposeful switchgear, and deep bucket seats reinforce the sense that this is not about comfort.

Powertrain

At its core, the 849 Testarossa packs a reworked mid-rear twin-turbo V8 paired with two electric motors, together producing a staggering 1,050 PS. Power is channelled through an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox, enough to push it to a top speed of 330 kmph. The powertrain breathes through larger fixed-geometry turbochargers with low-friction bearings, borrowed straight from the F80 program. A new heat shield design from the 296 GT3 improves thermal management in the 849 Testarossa. Even the crankshaft has been lightened to let the V8 spin more freely.

Beyond its engine and aero, the 849 Testarossa takes a big leap forward in the digital realm. It debuts Ferrari’s Slip Slide Control (SSC) 9.0, which houses sideways-management software. It also includes the Ferrari Integrated Vehicle Estimator (FIVE).

What’s This Witchcraft?

FIVE is essentially a digital co-pilot. Using a network of sensors around the car, it creates a real-time ‘digital twin’ of the Testarossa, modelling exactly how it’s moving and, more importantly, predicting what it’s about to do next. For the driver, it translates to fewer corrections at the wheel, more confidence at the limit, and ultimately, quicker lap times without the drama of unexpected oversteer.

In The End…

It’s tech like this that shows Ferrari is not just looking back with the 849 Testarossa. Global deliveries of the 849 Testarossa Coupe are set to begin early next year, while the open-top Spider version will follow in late 2026. It will take on the likes of the Lamborghini Revuelto.
