Move aimed at curbing rising levels of air pollution in the country

China Stops Production Of 553 Car Models

The Chinese government has suspended the production of 553 car models in the country. The latest order has come after these models failed to adhere to the fuel economy norms listed by the government. Cars from international joint ventures such as Beijing Benz Automotive, FAW-Volkswagen and Shanghai GM have been affected by this move.

Last year, the Chinese government had announced that it would take strict steps towards curbing pollution. These steps included a restriction on coal usage, curbing steel supply and implementation of stricter pollution norms. The latest move by the government is in line with the above mentioned steps taken to curb pollution. The Chinese government also said that it would be coming up with various other methods to control pollution and phasing out fossil fuel-powered vehicles is one of them.

The steps taken by the Chinese government sound quite familiar. In 2017, the Indian government did something similar when it banned the sale of BS-III vehicles in the country and restricting registration of vehicles with diesel engines above 2000cc in the Delhi NCR region. The government has also set a target of 100 per cent electric mobility in the country by 2030 while it plans to implement BS-VI emission norms by the year 2020.
