BMW’s new X5 becomes more and more value for money for a SUV at the pinnacle of the BMW pyramid. Just a few months ago, BMW launched the new X5 which essentially is a massive update on the X5 in a fully loaded trim called the Design Pure Experience. Now BMW has a more affordable variant with a few features trimmed down from the specifications sheet to widen its appeal. This new variant, called the X5 Expedition, is priced at Rs 64.9 lakh, ex-showroom.
The Expedition X5 is about Rs 6 lakh cheaper than the Pure Experience pack but for that price, you’ve got to do away with a few features. The gearbox is a standard steptronic 8-speed unit instead of a Steptronic Sports unit. The Expedition gets a toned down music system with 9 speakers instead of the 16 speaker Harman Kardon unit in the Pure Experience X5. BMW has also removed paddle shifters, electric lumbar support and the third row seats from the Expedition pack. The third row was anyway a major squeeze in on the Pure Experience X5 and so this isn’t a feature that will be missed.
Navigation, DVD with integrated hard drive and the 26cm display screen are also off the list. Instead, the Expedition X5 gets a 16.5cm display with CD drive. This new entry level variant also loses out on the launch control function. Rest of the equipment including the long list of safety features, the panoramic sunroof, 4-way climate control, the works, are all part of the more affordable X5.
On the outside, instead of the adaptive LED headlights, the Expedition X5 gets Bi-Xenons, normal halogen fog lamps instead of LED fog lamps, the grille without the titanium finish and a few more embellishments that are standard on the Pure Experience trim. The Expedition X5 shares the same in-line six-cylinder 3.0-litre engine developing 262PS of power and 560Nm of torque.
