  • iMT to be introduced in Kia cars as well.
  • It’s basically a clutchless manual gearbox, enabling the driver to shift gears without a clutch.
  • Hyundai Venue iMT to launch in the coming weeks.

Earlier in July 2020, we had reported that Hyundai was gearing up to launch the Venue with a clutchless manual gearbox. Dubbed ‘iMT,’ this transmission allows one to shift gears manually without using a clutch lever. While it’ll be offered in the Venue initially, Hyundai has announced that this tech will soon be introduced in more cars as well.

Initially, this technology will be offered in cars equipped with turbo-petrol powertrains. The next car to feature this technology is the upcoming Kia Sonet, which will share its powertrains with the Hyundai Venue. It’s also safe to assume that this gearbox could make it to the turbo-petrol variants of the Verna, Creta and Seltos.

Turbo-petrol variants aren’t the only ones that will benefit from this technology. Even the diesel and naturally aspirated petrol variants of Hyundai cars will soon be offered with this gearbox. We expect these iMT equipped cars to launch in the coming months.

So what’s an iMT? In simple words, it’s a manual gearbox without a clutch lever. The work that your left leg would’ve done is handled here by a couple of sensors and hydraulic actuators that engage and dis-engage the clutch. Read more about this cool tech in detail right here. You can also watch our boss explain about it in a detailed video

While it does offer convenience and rest to your left leg, it remains to be seen if the drive experience would still remain as engaging as a conventional manual gearbox. And to answer that question, we’ll be driving the Hyundai Venue iMT shortly. So stay tuned to ZigWheels for more updates on this.
