UM will showcase its first electric motorcycle for the Indian market and might also switch its focus from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles in the future. We list down the two-wheelers that will be on display at its stall.

New 250cc motorcycle:

New 250cc motorcycle:

UM will be showcasing an all-new powerplant at the 2018 Auto Expo. Details about the engine is scarce and we expect it to be a single-cylinder, air-cooled unit employing carburettors for fuelling. It will be a much simpler engine in comparison to the liquid-cooled and fuel-injected motor as seen on the current range of motorcycles to keep cost low. Talking about numbers, the new engine will deliver around 20-22PS and around 18-20Nm of peak torque. The 280cc motor pumps out 25PS and 23Nm of peak torque. We also feel that UM might employ a 5-speed gearbox to keep cost under check. Styling of the new motorcycle will be similar to the existing UM range of cruisers. The new engine will play a crucial role in making the UM brand more accessible as the Renegade Sports S which is the most affordable bike in its range retails for Rs 1.6 lakh. We expect the new UM 250cc motorcycle to be priced between Rs 1.25 and Rs 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

UM Electric Cruiser:

UM surprised everyone when it unveiled its first electric cruiser motorcycle at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan and wants to wow the Indian audiences at the 2018 Auto Expo. With electric vehicles (EVs) being the talk of the town and other major two-wheeler manufacturers entering the fray, UM has also decided to take the plunge. While most electric vehicles are scooters or naked motorcycles, UM wants to enter the EV segment with a cruiser. The new electric motorcycle will be showcased with a 18kW motor as compared to the 12kW motor seen on the bike in EICMA.

Also, the cruiser bike will have a 5-speed gearbox that will be beneficial in reducing the load on the motor while cruising and be useful in increasing the range. It will follow the traditional cruiser styling with lot of bling elements that will set it apart from other EVs. UM will only be showcasing the product and it will launch the new electric cruiser bike in 2019. UM also have specified that they wouldn’t venturing into electric scooters in the near future.

UM Scrambler X

UM Scrambler X:

UM will also be showcasing a new scrambler motorcycle that was showcased at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show. UM have no plans to launch the new scrambler in India soon and will be gauging the reactions of audiences from the show. If the response is positive we might see the new UM Scrambler getting launched by late 2018 or in 2019. Unlike the bike that was showcased in EICMA which was powered by a 125cc engine, the India-spec bike might feature the new single-cylinder 250cc powerplant. There is demand for dual-purpose motorcycles in the Indian two-wheeler space and we feel that it might click if they manage to price it close to Rs 1.5 lakh mark. The international-spec model also featured USD forks and we feel that the India version might get telescopic front forks to keep cost under check.
