The Kiger is based on Renault-Nissan’s CMF-A+ platform, which also underpins the Magnite

Renault has unveiled its debut sub-4m SUV, the Kiger, which was introduced as a concept last year. The production-spec SUV is not far removed from the concept in terms of its design. It shares its platform with the Nissan Magnite, but still manages to stand out from the crowd with its sexy looks and bold presence. It will also come loaded with a comprehensive list of features, to keep it on par with the competition. At first glance, does it have enough to create a stir in what is already a crowded and heavily contested segment? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

The Kiger’s presence is emphasised by the bold Renault grille up front.

It gets a split-headlamp setup, but unlike the Kwid, these are all-LED units.

DRLs flank the grille, accompanied by integrated turn indicators. The faux air dams below the headlamps add to the ruggedness of the Kiger.

In profile, the Kiger looks like a crossover thanks to the raked A-pillar and swooping roofline.

The sub-4m SUV stands on 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, set into squared-out wheel arches, which along with the body cladding, gives it a muscular look.

On top, the roof rails are capable of withstanding 50kg of luggage.

At the rear, the Kiger retains the C-shaped tail lamps from the concept showcased earlier.

If you look closely, the rear parking camera has been placed inside the Renault logo. Smart move, Renault.

Inside, the Kiger one-ups the Magnite in terms of coolness. It gets an 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system and different graphics on the digital instrument cluster.

Save for the gloss black insert and a different horn pad with the Renault logo, the Kiger’s steering wheel is similar to its cousin, the Nissan Magnite.

Renault is looking to position the Kiger as a worthy competitor in a hotly contested segment by loading it to the gills with features.

The Kiger even gets an Arkamys tuned sound system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Additional features include multiple drive modes, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start.

Cruise control and connected car tech are missing from the package. A sunroof will also sorely be missed.

A wireless phone charger and a Phillips PM 2.5 AC filter are offered as part of a separate accessory pack.

The rear seats get their own set of creature comforts such as a central armrest with cupholders, a 12V charging socket, and rear AC vents. Speaking of rear seats, they are one of the most spacious in the segment and can accommodate three adults with ease.

The Kiger gets one of the largest boots in the segments, offering 405-litres of space. This can be extended to a massive 879 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Safety is covered by four airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and parking sensors with a rear camera.

Under the hood, the Kiger will come with two petrol engines: the 72PS 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit seen in the Triber and the 100PS 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Magnite.

A 5-speed manual gearbox is offered as standard with both engines.

It is the automatic options that differ. The turbo-petrol engine gets a CVT whereas the NA petrol engine comes with a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

Like its Nissan sibling, the Kiger is expected to undercut all its rivals with a competitive price, possibly from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 9.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

Aside from the Magnite, it will take on segment heavyweights including the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser.
