Not a surprise, in our opinion, as the pre-facelifted Vitara Brezza secured four stars in the Global NCAP safety test

  • Toyota Urban Cruiser secures four stars in the Global NCAP safety test.
  • It secured four stars in Adult Occupant Protection and three stars in Child Occupant Protection.
  • Pre-facelifted Vitara Brezza has secured four stars in 2018.
  • Next-gen Urban Cruiser to be launched after the new Vitara Brezza.

Global NCAP has crash tested the Toyota Urban Cruiser and awarded it a four-star safety rating. It must be noted that the Urban Cruiser’s donor SUV, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, had also secured four stars when it was tested back in 2018. So the Urban Cruiser getting four stars is no surprise.

The base-spec Urban Cruiser was put into action for this test, which is typical of most crash tests. So the sub-4 metre SUV came fitted with all the essentials like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. As standard protocol, the sub-4 metre SUV was tested at 64kmph and secured four stars for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and three stars for Child Occupant Protection (COP).

Adult Occupant Protection

  • The Urban Cruiser scored 13.52 out of 17 marks in the AOP.

  • Both the front occupants had good protection for their heads.

  • However, the driver’s chest had adequate protection while the co-driver’s chest had a good amount of shielding.

  • The same applies for the tibias of both the front occupants.

  • Both the knees of the driver and co-driver’s right side had adequate protection as they could come in contact with structures behind the dashboard.

  • The footwell area and body shell is rated stable and capable of further beatings.

Child Occupant Protection

  • For COP, the Urban Secure garnered 36.68 points out of 49.

  • The three-year old child seat was forward facing while the 1.5-year old dummy was placed in a rear facing unit.

  • Both the child seats prevented excessive movements for both the dummies.

  • However, the three-year old on the forward facing seat received low and fair protection to the head and chest respectively.

  • The rear facing unit of the 1.5-year old unit offered good protection to the head and chest.

It must be noted that the AOP scores are slightly better than pre-facelift Vitara Brezza that was crash tested as the Toyota gets seat-belt pretensioners for both the front occupants instead of just the driver in case of the Maruti.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is currently priced from Rs 8.88 lakh (ex-showroom). Its successor will be launched after the next-gen Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza goes on sale in the coming months. Once launched, it will renew its rivalry with the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kiger.
