The Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch are two micro SUVs that are a direct rival to one another. We’ve already compared their design, interior, features and powertrain specifications in our image gallery comparison article, but we only recently got a chance to test their real-world performance.
So in this story, we take a look at their acceleration and deceleration figures, to find out which is the quicker amongst the two. Here’s a look at their respective specifications before the performance test:

Both the cars are really close in terms of their output figures. While the Punch has a higher power figure, the Exter has a marginally higher torque output.
They even share the same transmission options, but the Exter gets paddle shifters with its AMT, something which the Punch misses out on.
Let’s see how they perform in the performance test.

Both tested cars were equipped with the manual transmission, and despite the similarities in their on-paper specs, it is the Exter which came out winning in the 0-100kmph and quarter mile test. It was more than 3 seconds quicker in the 0-100kmph test, and more than 1.5 seconds quicker in the quarter mile test.

However, the story was different in the roll-on in-gear test, where the Punch proved to be quicker. The Exter has longer gear ratios, which means it accelerates slower from a fixed speed in a fixed gear with respect to the Tata Punch.
But in the braking test, the Exter stopped 3.19 metres before the Tata Punch.

Price (ex-showroom) |

Rs. 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh |
The on-paper similarities between the Exter and Punch extend beyond their size and output figures as they are sold in a rather similar ballpark.
While the Exter retails between Rs 6.12 lakh and Rs 10.42 lakh, the Punch is sold from Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 10.15 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from rivaling each other, they can be considered as alternatives to hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, and sub-4m SUVs like the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
