Quick Highlights

  • Hyundai Exter gets two new variants: S Smart and SX Smart

  • Both variants come with features like a sunroof, a tyre pressure monitoring system and more

  • Available across all powertrains including both petrol and CNG options

  • A larger infotainment and reverse parking camera available as accessories at a special bundle price

Hyundai India has updated the variant lineup of the Exter by introducing two new variants, called the S Smart and SX Smart. What this move does is make premium features more accessible and affordable for a wider range of buyers. Additionally, Hyundai has now standardized ISOFX child seat anchors across its variant lineup.

What Do The New Variants Offer?

Starting with the S Smart variant, you get a sunroof — a feature that would attract more buyers at the price range. Along with that, you also get LED tail lights, rear AC vents, LED DRLs, a tyre pressure monitoring system and 15-inch steel wheels.

With the SX Smart trim, Hyundai has offered the smart key with push start-stop button, a sunroof, projector headlamps, a tyre pressure monitoring system, 15-inch steel wheels and a shark fin antenna.

Both variants also come with an optional 9-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a rear parking camera. These features will be available as accessories at an additional price of Rs 15,000, and with a 3-year warranty.

Powertrain Options

Both the variants are offered with all the powertrain options available with the Exter. You can opt for either a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which makes 83 PS and 114 Nm or a  factory fitted CNG kit, but with a reduced output of 69 PS and 95.2 Nm.

The petrol variant comes with the option of a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed AMT automatic transmission, while the CNG option is offered only with a manual.

Pricing

The Exter’s overall pricing ranges between Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.51 lakh (ex-showroom). Being mids-spec variants, the new variants are placed somewhere in the middle of the Exter’s price range. Here’s a detailed look:

Variant

Price (ex-showroom)

S Smart MT

Rs 7.68 lakh

SX Smart MT

Rs 8.16 lakh

S Smart AMT

Rs 8.39 lakh

SX Smart AMT

Rivals

The Exter competes with other micro SUVs like the Maruti Ignis and Tata Punch. It also faces competition from hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Tata Tiago.

The Exter is already known for its value proposition, and this move will further help in growing sales since India is a market where people love features. Offering more features at a lower price would just help attract those who wanted the abovementioned amenities but couldn’t stretch their budget.
