The Honda City hybrid will be the first mass market ‘strong’ hybrid offering to go on sale in the country

  • Honda City hybrid uses the same specifications as the Thailand model.
  • Pairs a 109PS electric motor with a 98PS 1.5-litre petrol engine.
  • Top-spec ZX to get Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
  • Sportier RS trim likely to be offered as an add-on package without RS branding.
  • Unofficial bookings accepted at select dealerships.

The wraps are set to come off the Honda City hybrid on April 14, and a document from the Delhi RTO has revealed the car’s specifications ahead of its unveiling. As per the doc, the City hybrid will be offered in two trims: V and ZX. The top-spec ZX will also get ‘Sensing’ or Honda-speak for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The Honda City hybrid will use the same setup as the Thai-spec model. So it gets a 109PS electric motor, paired with a 98PS 1.5-litre petrol engine. Primarily, the electric motor will be in action with the petrol engine assisting whenever you need that extra shove of power. Like most hybrid cars, the City hybrid can be driven in EV-only mode or a mix of both.

In India, the City Hybrid is expected to return around 30kmpl, or around 10kmpl more than the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz mild-hybrid AT, one of the most fuel-efficient models in the segment.

Now to the other important bit of information: Honda’s Sensing which includes the usual complement of adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation system, blindspot detection system, and collision mitigation braking system. And if this document is to be believed, the City Hybrid could get all these features.

Plus, Honda is likely to offer the sportier RS version as an add-on package, albeit without the RS badging. So it will get minor sportier embellishments like a blacked-out grille, ORVMs, rear spoiler, and red highlights on the inside. Exact details will follow soon, so stay tuned.

The Honda City Hybrid is expected to be priced around Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom), putting it in contention with the 1.5-litre TSI variants of the Skoda Slavia and upcoming Volkswagen Virtus. Unofficial bookings are currently being accepted at select dealerships.
