It could borrow the more powerful and fuel efficient 1-litre petrol unit from the Celerio to offer alongside the 800cc engine

  • It is likely based on Suzuki’s Heartect platform similar to the Celerio and S-Presso.

  • Spy shots indicate it is larger than the current Alto 800.

  • Features such as rear power windows and touchscreen infotainment are expected.

  • Safety kit to include dual airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors as standard.

  • New Alto will be launched on August 18.

The all-new Maruti Alto has been caught on camera once again with minimal camouflage. It seems to be a size larger than its predecessor, and could go up a tyre size as well. It’s expected to break cover around the festive season with prices starting at Rs 3.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

What we saw of the new Alto

We have only seen the rear of the Alto so far, and its rounded fascia, large taillights and chunky bumper seem to be inspired by the Celerio hatchback. The new Alto has a taller stance which should open up more room inside.

Its wheel and tyre setup seems a size larger, too – the Alto 800 had 12-inch wheels with 145-section tyres, but the new Alto could get 13-inch steel rims similar to the standard S-Presso and Celerio variants.

The Alto is likely based on the Maruti Suzuki Heartect platform similar to the Celerio and S-Presso. It’s expected to be a bit longer than its 3.5-metre long predecessor, and these spy shots indicate a decently-sized boot as well.

2022 Maruti Alto powertrains

Under the bonnet, the new Alto will likely continue with the 0.8-litre petrol engine that makes 48PS and 69Nm in the current model. Fingers crossed, it could also get the new 1-litre K10C petrol engine found in the S-Presso and Celerio. Although it’s likely to be an expensive option (if at all), the new engine is more powerful with an output of 67PS and 89Nm, and even more efficient than the dated smaller capacity engine which is rated for 22.05kmpl.

For reference, the S-Presso offers a fuel efficiency of over 24kmpl with the K10C engine while the Celerio claims 25kmpl. A CNG option is likely to be offered, albeit with the smaller 0.8-litre engine only. A 5-speed transmission will be standard, but we may see an AMT automatic offered on select variants of the new Alto.

The new Alto is expected to be relatively better-equipped than its predecessor with features such as a touchscreen, rear power windows and keyless entry. It’ll rival the Renault Kwid upon launch on August 18.
