New-gen Range Rover To Be Launched In India By Q1 Of FY2022

The fifth iteration of the flagship SUV brings a cleaner design, more tech, additional opulence, and multiple powertrain options

 

  • Design changes to include cleaner character lines, flush-fitting door handles, new bumpers, and vertically stacked connected tail lamps.

  • Available in standard- and long-wheelbase body styles

  • Gets 5-, 6-, and 7-seater options.

  • New SV Signature Suite option features 24-way adjustable lounge-like rear seats with massage function and two 11.4-inch entertainment screens.

  • Feature highlights include a new 13.1-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system, a 35-speaker Meridian sound system, wireless phone charging, and Alexa connected car tech.

  • Will be powered by six-cylinder with mild-hybrid tech and eight-cylinder engines, the former getting an optional plug-in-hybrid.

  • Will rival the  Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes-Maybach GLS, and Rolls Royce Cullinan.

It’s barely been over a few days since the next generation Range Rover SUV broke cover, and word from the folks at our partner portal Powerdrift is that it’s set to arrive in India by the first quarter of the 2022 financial year. So, this could be anytime after April 2022. That said, you’ll have to wait until the second quarter, which means anytime after July next year.

So what’s new in the 2022 Range Rover? While the basic styling is the same as before, the silhouette is definitely cleaner, helped by flush-fitting door handles. The At the front the grille insert has been revised, and you get new bumpers and a rectangular air intake. The rear sports most of the design changes with new sleek vertically stacked connected LED tail lamps that give off a futuristic vibe. It can be specced in standard or a long wheelbase body style.

 

Inside the new Range Rover, you can opt for 5-, 6-, and 7-seater options, and if you can afford spending more dosh, there’s a new SV Signature Suite option (on the long-wheelbase version). This version adds premium opulence in the form of 24-way adjustable lounge-like rear seats with massage function, dedicated climate control zones, twin 11.4-inch entertainment screens, and an electronically operable table.

Like the exterior, the dashboard follows a clean and minimalistic design featuring a large 13.1-inch JLR’s Pivi Pro infotainment system, a new steering wheel, and a 13.7-inch digital driver’s display. Don’t mistake minimalistic with less, as the SUV comes loaded with a 1600W 35-speaker Meridian sound system, four-zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Alexa connected car tech, Qi wireless phone charger, and adaptive LED headlamps. There’s also autonomous driving assists such as Adaptive Cruise Control with steering assist to aid a safer ride. 

Based on the Land Rover’s MLA platform, the carmaker will give the 2022 Range Rover a variety of  six- and eight-cylinder powertrains, with the former getting mild-hybrid tech as standard and  an optional plug-in hybrid setup. The PHEV setup adds a 31.8kWh battery pack and a 142PS electric motor to allow the SUV to run upto 100kms on pure electricity. For the enthusiasts, there’s of course a beefy 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 in the lineup. The carmaker has also confirmed an all-electric iteration on its way for 2024.  

Other performance trickery comes in the form of adaptive air suspension, all-wheel steering, and active anti-roll bars, which not only should make for a comfy ride, but also make the SUV fairly handy around corners.

In India, we’ve already got the current-gen Range Rover retailing from Rs 2.10 crore to Rs 4.38 crore (ex-showroom, India). Expect the new-gen model to be priced at a premium. It will rekindle its rivalry with the Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes-Maybach GLS, and Rolls Royce Cullinan.
