BMW Motorrad has filed patents for a new electric motorcycle. This would be the first production e-motorcycle from the Bavarian brand and, by the looks of it, could be based on the G 310 R.
The patent filings reveal the unique construction of the upcoming BMW electric bike. BMW has packaged the powertrain very differently compared to most e-motorcycles. The battery pack has been placed vertically, where usually the radiator of an ICE bike would sit. This should help keep the battery pack cool.
The German bikemaker has even placed the motor in a unique way. It sits high up, under the seat, and is positioned longitudinally. This motor then powers a bevel gear that relays it to the front sprocket which also acts as a reduction gearbox to multiply torque and gear down the motor’s rotational speed. The BMW electric motorcycle gets a final belt drive, instead of a chain drive seen on the ICE counterpart.
Lastly, the electronic control unit has been placed below the motor. Going by the patent drawings, there appears to be ample storage where the “fuel tank” usually sits. We hope BMW Motorrad uses this space to store the charger.
The BMW e-motorcycle is likely to borrow its battery pack and motor from the CE-04 electric scooter. For perspective, it makes 42.58PS and 61.9Nm, while the petrol-powered G 310 R makes 34PS and 28Nm.
Now, the big question is, will it be coming to India? There’s a high possibility that it will. Last year, TVS boss Sudarshan Venu had revealed there’s a sub-15kW electric motorcycle in the works with its German partner. It means TVS could manufacture the BMW electric bike here, along with the G 310 R and the G 310 GS. This also opens the possibility of an electric TVS Apache RR 310. Now that would be interesting, right?
