The Maruti Swift has become the ninth vehicle in the carmaker’s lineup to get a natural gas variant. The S-CNG option is offered on the mid-spec VXI and ZXI trim levels, limited to the manual variants.
Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios CNG and the Tata Tiago iCNG are the Swift’s primary rivals. In Maruti’s lineup, hatchbacks such as the Celerio, Wagon R and Alto also offer CNG variants.

Although you pay a hefty premium of Rs 95,000, the S-CNG is more than merely a factory fitted CNG kit. It gets a specially tuned powertrain and suspension and a dual-interdependent ECU setup to control the petrol and CNG fuel delivery systems.
A 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol-CNG engine powers the Swift S-CNG, tuned for 89PS and 113Nm on petrol mode and a humbler 77.5PS and 98.5Nm on CNG mode. It’s paired with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard on both variants.
The petrol Swift already gets a stellar fuel economy of over 22kmpl; the S-CNG is claimed to deliver up to 30.9km per kg of CNG.

Depending on the variant, the Maruti Swift S-CNG offers features such as push button start, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable and foldable outer rearview mirrors, rear wiper and washer and a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen.
Fuel efficiency and lower overall running costs of CNG are the strong points of the new Swift CNG. However, with the Swift’s already small 268-litre boot, you’d likely have to put your shopping bags in the rear seat.
