Giving shape to the most comprehensive and well defined awards process in the industry is not easy, and it is only fair that this methodology is spelt out for our readers too. Modelled around the European Car of the Year Awards process, the two-stage selection method involving jury members from the ZigWheels editorial team and independent eminent personalities from all walks of life, ensured that our pick of the year remains the most outstanding and relevant vehicle for the largest cross-section of our readers. Here are the rules by which the game was played

Jury briefing

Cars and bikes which were manufactured in the country and went on sale nationwide between December 1, 2011 and November 15, 2012 were eligible contenders for the 2012 Car and Bike of the Year awards. CBU cars and bikes were only judged within their own segments and were not eligible for the overall Car or Bike of the Year award.

Only all-new cars and bikes from the ground up were eligible for inclusion in the contenders list and no variants were permitted.

The cars and bikes needed to be available for members of the jury to touch, feel and experience. The jury had a one day drive and ride session in the hills around Pune in the vicinity of the famous Sinhagad Fort with the event HQ based at the Wildernest Resorts.

A mixed jury comprising of external jurors and ZigWheels editorial staff had to vote for individual segment winners first based with a scoring system. These individual segment winners would then qualify for the overall Car or Bike of the Year award.

Jury briefing

After individual segment winners were determined, the same jury then again voted for the overall Car or Bike of the Year award from the segment winners based on the scoring system mentioned below.

As in the previous three editions of the ET-ZigWheels Awards, the proven format and the robust process was akin to the well-established methodology used for European Car of the Year awards.

The most important aspect which the jury had to factor in while delivering their votes and verdicts was to see each contender’s fitness of purpose and its relevance in class. The sheer impact each vehicle could or couldn’t command in its class, in the view of each jury member was of the utmost importance.

Voting was performed by secret ballot and the process was ascertained, tabulated and validated by Ernst & Young.

[1] Scoring system for Individual segments

1. In a segment where there is only one vehicle, it wins the segment award by default. In each segment, each jury member rates the vehicles against each other and scores them in a reverse manner, i.e. in a segment with three vehicles, the best car in the juror’s opinion gets 3 points, the second best gets 2 and the last one gets 1.

2. After tallying the scores given by all the jurors, the vehicles that score the most number of points in each segment are declared as the segment winners. In case of a tie, the vehicle which has received the highest score from the most jurors breaks the tie. In segments with more than two vehicles, if they are tied for top scores as well, the vehicle with the maximum second best scores will break the tie and so on an so forth. If the tie still persists, the Jury Chair’s decision will break the tie.

3. All vehicles are rated only with regards to others in its segment and each segment is rated individually.

[2] Scoring system for overall Car and Bike of the Year Awards

1. Each juror has a total of 25 points allotted to them to accord to at least five vehicles of their choice among the individual segment winners. All 25 points have to be used and none can be kept spare.

2. A juror can allot a maximum of 10 points to their first choice vehicle and not more than that from the 25 allotted to them. Of course they are free to give 7 or 8 or 9 points to their first choice vehicle as they deem it to be.

3. The juror’s second choice vehicle cannot be given the same number of points as his first choice vehicle. It means there can’t be a joint first choice of vehicle in the score at all. The juror’s second choice vehicle should have been allotted at least two points less than his first. Eg: If he has given 8 points to his first choice vehicle, he can only give 6 points or less to his second choice vehicle.

4. Apart from point 3 which clearly spells out the distinction to be made for the first choice vehicle vis-a-vis the rest, jurors can give equal marks if they think it to be so for the next two or three or four vehicles.
