The Magnite Could Be Nissan’s Answer To The Hyundai Venue

• The Magnite will be underpinned by the Renault HBC’s CMF-A platform.
• It is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine.
• It’s likely to be priced around Rs 9.00 lakh mark.
• Datsun had also filed a trademark for the same name.

This may not be the first time you're hearing the name Magnite. Back in December 2019, Datsun had filed a trademark for the same name. However, a recent report states that even Nissan, Datsun’s parent company, has filed a trademark for the same name. Furthermore, the report also claims that Nissan has created a logo for the name Magnite.

As we all know, Nissan and Datsun have been struggling with their sales numbers in India. In a bid to improve matters, both carmakers are working on a sub-4m SUV to rival the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Venue. Last month, Nissan teased the SUV twice, revealing the taillamps and the overall silhouette of the SUV. Now, we have some crucial information about its underpinnings and powertrain options.

For starters, the Magnite will be based on the same platform as the upcoming Renault HBC. This platform is none other than Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance’s CMF-A architecture that underpins a host of cars such as the Datsun redi-GO as well as the Renault Kwid and Triber. As for powertrain options, we expect the Magnite to utilise the Triber’s 1.0-litre petrol engine. However, a turbocharged version of the same engine is on the cards as well. At present, the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine develops 72PS of power and 96Nm of torque in the Triber.

This engine is likely to be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox as well as the option of a 5-speed Easy-R AMT. The 1.0-litre TCE turbo petrol motor is expected to churn out 100PS and 160Nm of torque when it debuts in the Triber. Hence, we could expect similar output figures for Nissan’s sub-4m SUV. 

It remains to be seen whether Nissan and Datsun will use the same name for their SUVs. When launched, the Magnite will rival the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. We expect Nissan to price the sub-4 metre SUV around Rs 9 lakh mark.
