Tata has always been known for its big bulky SUVs like the Sumo and the Safari. The new Tata Nexon on the other hand is the flip side of the coin when it comes to the SUV mantra. The new Nexon is a compact SUV, the first ever from the Indian auto giant and will be launched by the end of 2016 or early 2017. So here are five things you need to know about it.

Tata Nexon exteriors:

The Tata Nexon compact SUV is like nothing we have ever seen from Tata Motors. Sure, there are still hints of the Indica, Vista and even the new Zica in the Nexon but the design language is completely new and fresh. For a change, there is a ton of intricate detail sprinkled all over the car, from the highlighted shoulder line strip that can be individually painted to the split floating roof design, there is a whole new generation of Tata cars we can see carrying forward this design. At the front we get a large angular black grille that flows seamlessly into the large headlamps. The headlamps itself come with daytime running lamps and projectors that make the car look modern. Around the back, the Nexon gets a very high shoulder line with a high mounted tail lamps and a sporty bumper with some great details thrown in for good measure. The new Nexon also gets a set of large wheels but we don’t think those might make it to production as they are here.

Tata Nexon interior:

The Nexon on the inside, just like the outside, is completely different from the likes of the Bolt and the Zest. You get a new dashboard, new contoured seats and a lovely free standing display that reminds us of cars like the Audi A3. The new Nexon also displays a much higher level of quality than the likes of the Bolt and the Zest and thankfully comes with a fair few cubbyholes. The Nexon also gets a knob to choose driver modes from between standard, Eco and Sport on the central tunnel which also is a large step up from Tata Motors. On the whole, the Nexon is a nice place to be in and is also quite spacious as compared to most of its peers.

Tata Nexon Engines:

The Nexon will come with two engines, a petrol and a diesel. The petrol with be the new Revotron Turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol making 90PS of peak power and 140Nm of peak torque. The diesel on the other hand is the tried and tested 1.3-litre diesel engine which makes 90PS of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque. The diesel of course will be the most popular variant in the Nexon with more than 50 percent of the sales. The diesel will also get an AMT variant based on the same 5-speed gearbox.

Tata Nexon Launch and competition:

The new Tata Nexon will be launched in India either in late 2016 or early 2017. The Nexon will follow the Tata Hexa, the Tata Zica (which will be renamed) and the Tata Kite 5 (which has not been named officially yet) in Tata Motors push for sales and renewed popularity in 2016. The Nexon will go up against the likes of the Ford Ecosport and the Mahindra TUV300. The Nexon will also go up against the likes of the upcoming Hyundai compact SUV and the Volkswagen Taigun which will also be eventually launched by the end of 2017.

Tata Nexon Price:

The Tata Nexon when launched will be priced extremely competitively. The Nexon in petrol form will be priced at about Rs 6.5 lakh while the diesel should start at about Rs 7 lakh. The top of the line petrol with a manual gearbox should be in the ballpark of about Rs 8 lakh while the diesel manual will be about Rs 9 lakh for the fully loaded version. The top of the line diesel automatic will be priced at about Rs 9.5 lakh which will make it quite an interesting proposition considering the fact that it looks much better than its peers.
