Alex Marquez will make way for Espargaro from the 2021 MotoGP season

We wrote about it earlier because it was pretty much a done deal but now it is official. KTM works rider Pol Espargaro will replace Alex Marquez in the MotoGP championship-winning Repsol Honda team from the 2021 season.

Espargaro, a former Moto2 world champion, has signed a two-year contract with Repsol Honda that will see the 29-year-old Spaniard partner compatriot and six-time premier class champion Marc Marquez.

The odd thing about this move is that it was announced even before Marquez’s younger brother Alex could debut with Repsol Honda this year. Part of that is, obviously, down to the COVID-19 pandemic due to which the premier class season hasn’t even begun. The first race weekend of the 2020 MotoGP season will be held from July 17 to 19 at Jerez.

Alex Marquez will continue his association with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) until the end of the 2022 season. The 24-year-old will move to the LCR Honda team from the 2021 MotoGP season. He had won the Moto2 championship last season after five seasons in the ‘intermediate’ class of MotoGP.
