Mercedes-Benz India has launched its mid-sized luxury SUV, the GLC 220d, priced at Rs 50.7 lakh while the GLC 300 is priced at Rs 50.9 lakh (both ex-showroom, Pune).

The German carmaker had launched 15 new products in 2015 and plans to launch 12 new products this year. The GLC is based on the MRA platform which underpins the Mercedes C-Class sedan as well, and bridges the gap between the GLA and the GLE SUV.

Design-wise, the front end of the GLC looks quite bold mainly because of the twin-slat grille, which houses the iconic Mercedes three-pointed star emblem. The headlamps are quite identical to the C-Class sedan whereas the sides have a very prominent shoulder line that starts from the fender and goes all the way upto the C-pillar. At the rear, the taillights might remind some of the S-Class Coupe. The interiors are almost similar to the C-Class sedan with a dual-tone set up and has bits of leather and wood which gives it a premium feel.

The GLC has been launched in two variants - GLC 220d and the GLC 300. The former is powered by Mercedes’ tried-and-tested 2.2-litre diesel unit that has been tuned to deliver 170PS of max power and 400Nm of peak torque. The petrol variant GLC 300 comes with a 2.0-litre engine that churns out 245PS of power along with 400Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to an all-new 9-speed GTronic automatic gearbox.

Mercedes will bring the initial few units of the GLC, called the Edition1, as CBU (Completely Built-Up) units and will start assembling the same in India by the end of this year. It will take on the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Audi Q5 in the mid-size luxury SUV segment.
