German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is going all out in making sure their (very wealthy) customers have plenty of new choices this festive season. Hot on the heels of the launch of the updated C-Class, the luxury carmaker has launched the E-Class All Terrain at Rs 75 lakh (ex-showroom India).

Mercedes’ rugged wagon was first showcased at the Auto Expo held earlier this year in February. And while we were expecting Mercedes-Benz to pick the meatier 3.0-litre V6 diesel motor for the E-Class All Terrain, they’ve chosen to play it safe. On offer is the 2.0-litre diesel engine that also does duty on the E-Class LWB sedan and the new C-Class. It makes a healthy 194PS of power and 400Nm of torque. This motor is paired with a 9-speed auto ‘box and Merc’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. It also features an increased ground clearance (+35mm) that can be selected by using the Dynamic select.

An ‘All-Terrain’ model from Mercedes-Benz means only one thing: tough looks. The E-Class All Terrain is no different in that sense, with a lot of muscle added to the mix courtesy a faux skidplate, body cladding and a faux bash plate at the rear. The India-spec car also gets a delicious looking set of 19-inch alloy wheels, up from 17-inches on the sedan.

What’s largely similar to the sedan, though, is the interior. You get the same dashboard and the same set of features including a three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting and a 12.3-inch screen for the infotainment. Where it one-ups its sedan cousin is in its practicality. Of course, it has a bigger boot at 640 litres, and you can better that still by using the 40:20:40 split rear seats. Flip the rear seats away completely and you’ve got access to 1820 litres of space. That’s larger than most apartments in Mumbai!

Compared to the E220d sedan it’s based upon, its a full Rs 18.5 lakh dearer. Is that money well spent for the added practicality and ground clearance? Let us know in the comments section below.
