Could it be the new entry-level model in the Nexa lineup?

  • The premium Wagon R spied here comes with LED tail lamps and black alloy wheels.
  • Interiors expected to come with a new colour scheme and upmarket upholstery and features.
  • Upcoming model expected to come with 1.2-litre K12B engine that develops 83PS and 113Nm.
  • Expected to be retailed via the carmaker’s premium Nexa chain.

Maruti Suzuki’s hot selling model, the Wagon R, is less than a year old in its latest avatar. And soon after the launch of the dressed up XL6, the carmaker has started work on an update that’s similar to the premium MPV for the Wagon R. Will this model, spied testing on public roads, be a new entry level offering in the carmaker’s Nexa line up?

The supposedly upmarket model has been spied testing alongside the current Wagon R. While it was wearing a heavy dose of camouflage, there’s no getting around the fact that its basic design is similar. Premium elements include new LED tail lamps while a closer look also reveals blacked-out alloy wheels borrowed from the Ignis. The front-end hasn’t been spied yet, but we expect the premium model to come with LED headlamps and DRLs since that’s a Nexa signature.

Inside, the premium Wagon R could come with a new colour scheme (possibly all-black) and upmarket upholstery a la the XL6. Considering the upmarket tag, it could also come with a handful of premium features like automatic headlamps and climate control. Notably, these features are not available in the Wagon R.

Under the hood, Maruti is likely to plonk the BS6-compliant 1.2-litre K12B engine that’s found in a host of Marutis. It develops 83PS of power and 113Nm of torque. And just like other models, expect it to come mated with 5-speed manual and AMT options. Maruti is unlikely to offer the 1.0-litre motor, however.

There isn’t an exact launch date for the premium Wagon R. But when it is launched, it could be a stepping stone in the carmaker’s Nexa lineup and could comfortably take position as the affordable Nexa car. Currently, the Wagon R starts from Rs 4.34 lakh and goes up to Rs 5.91 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
