Hyundai Verna Gets 1.4L Petrol Engine

Hyundai has added a smaller 1.4-litre petrol motor to the Verna lineup, making it more affordable and in turn, hoping to attract more buyers.

The prices of the car, ex-showroom Delhi, are as follows:

Hyundai Verna 1.4L E MT: Rs 7.80 lakh

Hyundai Verna 1.4L EX MT: Rs 9.10 lakh

Along with this update, Hyundai has also discontinued the base E and EX variants powered by the 1.6-litre petrol engine to prevent price and feature overlap with the new variants. The Hyundai Verna is now available in a total of 12 variants with prices ranging from Rs 7.80 lakh for the 1.4-litre petrol MT to Rs 12.88 lakh for the 1.6-litre diesel AT. 

The 1.4-litre motor is the same one that also powers the Hyundai Elite i20 petrol AT variant. The 4-cylinder engine develops 100PS of maximum power and 132Nm of peak torque and is paired to a 6-speed transmission.

The 1.4-litre petrol motor is only available with the base E and EX variants of the Verna and gets features such as blue backlit illumination for the interior, cooled glovebox, electrically adjustable ORVMs, projector fog lamps (EX), 15-inch alloy wheels (EX), 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system etc. Safety features offered as standard include dual front airbags, pretensioners for the front seatbelts, ISOFIX child seat mounts and ABS.

When launched back in August 2017, the Verna was exclusively offered with 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. However, changes in the Government’s rules regarding car classification based on engine sizes meant that the Verna was ended up as a ‘luxury car’. The eventual hike in GST cess on luxury cars also added to its price, making it one of the more expensive cars in its category.
