Yes, you heard it right! The Indian automobile industry is indeed countering a slowdown. Sales in the passenger vehicle segment grew only 2.15 per cent during financial year 2012 – 2013. With no signs of immediate recovery and passenger vehicle sales dipping by a sharp 8.21 per cent in April 2013 compared to April 2012 sales, car makers are exploring every possible avenue to boost sales. 

The good news is that one of these avenues happens to be offering sizeable discounts and deals on new cars to lift sales and clear inventory. The benefits include everything from flat cash discounts to free insurance, exchange offers and other freebies from manufacturers as well as dealers.

Some of the most notable discounts on cars right now include a Rs 1 lakh discount on the diesel versions of the Fabia, which Skoda has decided to phase out in India due to poor demand for the expensive premium hatchback. Those looking to buy a hatchback can consider the Hyundai i10, which is being sold with discounts of up to Rs 50,000. If it's an entry-level small car you're considering, then the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 can be bought for an attractive Rs 30,000 discount. Tata Motors has shaved off Rs 1 lakh from the price of the slow selling Aria crossover aside from an attractive Rs 45,000 discount on the Indigo eCS following strong competition from the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and the recently launched Honda Amaze. At the higher end of the price bracket, Volkswagen is offering a whopping Rs 2.5 lakh discount on the Passat apart from a Rs 1.5 lakh saving on the Jetta. Honda’s petrol-only Accord also has a substantial Rs 1.4 lakh discount.
