Get Ready To Set Sail With A Vastly Improved Google Maps

Android fans, rejoice! Google has previewed its upcoming Android 12 software at the I/O 2021 keynote, and they’re not limited to just the smartphone software. Google Maps will also be receiving a fair number of improvements and additions. Here are all the details:

Will Suggest The Most Fuel Efficient Route

Google Maps will soon suggest the most fuel efficient route to reduce overall emissions by assessing the terrain, live traffic and distance of your journey. While it is useful for those doing long distances, its accuracy is yet to be tested in the real world. It’s also expected to improve as more people adopt it. 

Area Busyness

Area Busyness notifies you if the particular place, business or area you’re travelling to is more crowded than usual. It comes across an useful feature (especially during these testing times) where social distancing is the need of the hour. Google also says this feature will be rolled out globally, so you will be seeing it in India soon.

Detailed Street Maps

As the name suggests, detailed street maps basically show a detailed architectural layout of a particular street. So you can now see a particular street’s sidewalks, the pedestrian crossing and islands just from a glance of your phone. This feature will be introduced in 50 new cities by the end of 2021. 

A More Tailored Map

Under this new feature, Google Maps highlights the most relevant information when you need it. For instance, in the morning, the maps will highlight the bakeries and coffee shops. It will also show you suggestions of similar spots if you have been to that particular place. In case of a new city, the app will highlight the local tourist spots so you can consider visiting them. 

More Improvements In AR Navigation

Google offers AR navigation by using a feature known as Live View. It essentially shows you where exactly to turn by using street signs and arrows by using a live feed. You’ll also be able to access a live view from the map and you can explore the shops and restaurants around you. It will also allow you to check out these business’ reviews and photos. 

Also, prominent virtual street signs will now be more helpful to navigate. It will also point towards key landmarks. And last but not least, Live View will also come with in-door navigation in popular places like train stations, shopping malls, and airports. Really cool!
