Recent reports suggest the 5-door version of Gypsy’s successor could get a turbocharged engine along with a mild-hybrid system.

While we expect the Jimny to come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, a turbo-petrol option is likely to be available as well. This will mostly come in the form of the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine that Suzuki offers overseas. It comes with the carmaker’s mild-hybrid system as standard but could be optional in India.

Since its 2018 launch overseas, the fourth-gen Jimny has garnered a lot of interest. Its demand was so overwhelming that Suzuki had to support supply by commencing production of the three-door model in India for export. While the model was showcased at Auto Expo 2020, there was no confirmation on whether it would be introduced here.

However, latest reports indicate it may very well be on the cards for a 2022 launch and the model sold here could be a five-door version that sits on an extended wheelbase. The stretched Jimny, which was also spotted testing in Europe, is likely to be 300mm longer and 100kg heavier than the standard three-door version.

Expect the Jimny to be priced from Rs 10 lakh when it arrives in India. Apart from taking on the Mahindra Thar and the upcoming BS6 Force Gurkha, it will also lock horns with sub-4m and compact SUVs in the same price range.
