Toyota Hyryder Slots Above Urban Cruiser Sub-4m SUV And Rivals Hyundai Creta

• The Hyryder is around 4.3 metres long, much larger than a subcompact SUV. 

• It’s powered by 1.5-litre engines similar to its closest rivals such as the Kia Seltos. 

• All-wheel drive (AWD) is on offer, in addition to a strong hybrid option. 

Even before Toyota unveiled the new Urban Cruiser Hyryder, we knew that it would compete in the compact SUV segment. But, due to the back-to-back unveilings of the Hyryder and the new generation Maruti Brezza, some people got confused about the Hyryder’s positioning in the market. Just to be clear, it’s a Hyundai Creta and Volkswagen Taigun rival and is much larger than the Brezza or Urban Cruiser. 

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the first co-developed product of the Toyota-Maruti joint venture, and similar to Kia with the Seltos and MG with the Astor, Toyota chose the popular compact SUV segment for the Hyryder. The ‘Urban Cruiser’ family name signifies that the Hyryder is part of Toyota’s rough-road-ready lineup of cars. 

The Toyota Hyryder is a size larger than the Urban Cruiser sub-4m SUV. It gets a host of premium features such as a head-up display and panoramic sunroof, and even offers a new strong hybrid powertrain from Toyota’s global lineup. 

It neatly slots between the Brezza-based Urban Cruiser and the Fortuner in Toyota’s lineup. Even in terms of off-roading capability, the AWD-specced Hyryder is the middle ground between the front-wheel drive Urban Cruiser and the proper 4x4 Fortuner.

We expect the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder to be priced from Rs 9.5 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. It’ll rival the Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Kia Seltos and MG Astor. As for the Urban Cruiser, it’s yet to be announced when the subcompact SUV will get a generational update similar to the Brezza.
