Volkswagen revealed that the new-generation of the Tiguan will be coming to India in the April-June quarter of 2025. What’s even more exciting is that it will be introduced in the sporty R-line version which will be launched in India for the first time. The R-Line iteration gets some cosmetic tweaks and design enhancements over the regular second-generation model.
In this report, we compare the design of the Tiguan that we currently get in India vs the upcoming new-generation Tiguan in the R-line form.
Volkswagens are known for their understated yet timeless designs which look elegant and appealing for all types of buyers. We have already seen how Volkswagen differentiates its regular and GT-line models in India with plenty of sporty touches and contrasting blacked-out elements. So what’s up with the R-Line and what new does it introduce over the design that we get with the current Tiguan?
Well, up front, both get a sophisticated and minimalist look which is identical to the Volkswagen design language. The current model gets a busier looking grille with plenty of horizontal chrome elements. The new-gen in its R-line version gets a cleaner and more subtle look. The LED headlights have been made sharper and sleeker now, and you also get a more aggressive look for the front bumper in the R-Line. Furthermore, the new upcoming model gets the “R” badging on the grille.
Being a new-generation model, the forthcoming Tiguan R-Line gets a slightly different silhouette and you will clearly be able to differentiate it from the one that is on sale currently. For starters, the alloy wheels get a new design and are also expected to be larger in size than the 18-inch ones on the current model. The window line in the new-gen model tapers upwards as it moves to the rear end. Moreover, the Tiguan R-Line also gets chunkier wheel arches for a more macho look. The current Tiguan comes with a side step which has been omitted from the Tiguan R-Line.
The rear end gets a proper revamp with a completely new design for the LED tail lights which get a sleek connected look now. The bumper design has also been changed, and instead of the chrome elements on the current model, you get contrasting blacked-out styling elements. Both models come with a shark fin antenna and a roof-mounted spoiler.
Overall, we can confidently say that the Tiguan R-Line looks more modern and dashing when compared to the current design of the Tiguan which honestly needed a refresh in the form of generation change. Chances are that VW also introduces some new hues with the new-generation Tiguan.
The current-generation model of the Tiguan is priced at Rs 38.17 lakh (ex-showroom). Being the R-Line version, the new-generation model could be priced around the Rs 55 lakh (ex-showroom) mark, considering it is a CBU. The Tiguan locks horns with the likes of Hyundai Tucson, MG Gloster, Toyota Fortuner and the upcoming new Skoda Kodiaq. Expect it to be launched on the Indian shores sometime around June 2025.
We love the sporty Volkswagen Virtus GT in India, and expect a similar reception for the Tiguan R-Line. The Tiguan has always been a great all-round package at the price it's offered at and deserves more love, which we expect to happen with the new-gen models.
