The Black Edition is available only with the top-spec High variant, with the AT gearbox

Toyota very recently launched the Hilux Black Edition on our shores, priced at Rs 37.9 lakh (ex-showroom). Over the regular model, the special edition brings in a meaner and more aggressive look with a stealthy black look. It is important to note that the Black Edition can be had with the top-spec High variant and the automatic gearbox configuration only.

In this report, we take a closer look at the exterior and interior changes that the Hilux Black Edition brings to the table.

Design

The fascia of the special edition when compared to the regular Hilux remains the same, except for a few tweaks. The massive grille now comes with gloss-black surrounds which replace the chrome bits.

Even the centre strip has been dechromed, and the only chrome portion you get to see is on the Toyota logo. The design of the bumper and LED headlights remain the same, however, the former is completely blacked-out in the case of the special edition.

In profile,  the Black Edition sports blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels while the regular version comes with silver 18-inch alloy wheels.

The regular model’s door handles outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs) have also been dechromed in the Black Edition. The side step has been carried over as is in the special edition.

Coming to the rear, in both versions, you get a chunky chrome finish on the bumper. The badges, boldToyota lettering on the tailgate, and LED tail lights are identical on both iterations.

Interior Changes

Well, there are none! Both avatars of the Hilux come with an all-black theme with contrasting silver inserts. The interior of both versions offer a rugged feel and the material quality feels solid and built to last.

The dashboard is dominated by an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You also get a coloured multi-information display, a dual-zone climate control, a 6-speaker sound system, a powered driver’s seat and cruise control.

The safety net consists of 7 airbags (as standard), hill assist, front and rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, electronic stability control and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

Powertrain

No mechanical tweaks have been made to the Hilux Black Edition. It continues to feature the same 2.8-litre diesel engine which makes 204 PS and up to 500 Nm. In the regular model, power is delivered to all four wheels using either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. In the special edition, you only get the latter.

Price And Rivals

The Toyota Hilux is priced from Rs 30.40 lakh to Rs 37.90 lakh. As mentioned earlier, the Black Edition is based on the top-spec High variant and doesn’t command a premium. The Isuzu V-Cross is the only alternative to the Hilux.

The special edition looks meaner, and gives a sense of exclusivity with the blacked-out elements. Out of the two, which one would you pick? Let us know in the comments section.
