Toyota surprised everyone with the ninth generation of the Hilux pickup truck at the Thailand Motor Expo 2025. This new generation of the world-famous pickup truck looks sleeker than before, yet manages to look bigger too at the same time. Let’s take a deeper look at the new Toyota Hilux in these 9 real-life images.
The designers at Toyota have done a great job of making the Hilux look sleeker yet more menacing than before. The headlamps have become slimmer and have a full LED treatment. There’s no Toyota logo, but instead the top portion of the grille has a large Toyota lettering that we’ve also seen on the Land Cruiser GR-Sport.
While the previous generation (the only one to come to India officially yet) had a more rounded design, the new one has sharp cuts and creases, giving it a very futuristic look. And since it is a Hilux, you can totally rely on it being dependable and sturdy.
When you look at the profile and the rear of the new Hilux, you can see that Toyota means business when it comes to making a nearly indestructible pickup truck. However, it’s also evident that Toyota got tired after designing the front, so it rushed to design the rest to just finish the project. A little more effort in the sides and rear design of the Hilux would have been much appreciated.
The eighth generation had a single cab and double cab layout, with the option of either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, as well as petrol and diesel engines. The ninth generation doesn’t veer far away from this, and in addition, you also get an all-electric powertrain for the first time with the Hilux.
You can have either a single-cab or a double-cab layout with the ninth-gen Hilux. Overall, there are 14 different variations of the latest Hilux. These include trims like Smart and Premium, body styles like single-cab or double-cab, and powertrains like diesel and all-electric.
Typically, the Fortuner and Hilux have always had nearly identical cabins with the same dashboard layout and similar use of materials, too. This time around, the cabin in the Hilux looks more like a derivative of the Land Cruiser 250, and could it preview the interior of the next-gen Fortuner?
The new Hilux comes with a large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver’s display, which is a big leap from the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and semi-digital instrument cluster of the eighth-gen Hilux.
It also gets a new small display for the AC as well as physical AC controls, and a new steering wheel that we’ve seen on the LC 250 and LC FJ models globally. You also get ventilated front seats, a wireless charger, drive modes and more creature comforts.
Yep, you read it right! Toyota has taken the leap to give the Hilux an all-electric powertrain with a 59.2 kWh battery pack that gives it a WLTP range of just 242 km. The electric motor churns out 196 PS and 205 Nm.
But don’t worry, Toyota hasn’t gone away with its tried and tested 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engines, and both get a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This system isn’t new, as we’ve already seen it on the Fortuner Neo Drive. When the Hilux comes to India in the near future, it is likely to only have the 2.8-litre mild-hybrid powertrain.
And come 2028, Toyota will launch a fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) variant of the Hilux that will be intended for Europe and Oceania markets. We hope it makes its way to India as well, at least if not alongside the global launch, but a few years later.
Do you like the new Toyota Hilux? Do you want Toyota India to get only the diesel or also explore other powertrains? Let us know in the comments.
