Hyundai India has just re-launched the base Era variant for its i20 hatchback at Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and also given two other variants a price decrease to welcome more buyers into its showrooms. Curious? Let’s take a look at what changes the carmaker has made:
With the re-introduced Era variant, the i20 line-up now starts at a price of Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while the second-from-base Magna Executive and the mid Magna trim also see price revisions. Here is the updated pricelist for these variants:
|
Variant |
Price (Old) |
Price (Current) |
|
Era |
- |
Rs 5.99 lakh |
|
Magna Executive |
Rs 6.87 lakh |
Rs 6.74 lakh |
|
Magna |
Rs 7.12 lakh |
Rs 7 lakh |
All prices ex-showroom
As seen above, the Era variant brings down the entry point to the i20 range by a massive Rs 88,000. Furthermore, the Magna Executive’s price has been revised by Rs 13,000, while the Magna variant also sees a price cut of Rs 12,000. All these changes ensure enhanced appeal, especially for budget-conscious buyers.
Sitting at the bottom of the premium hatchback’s range once more is the Era variant, which offers features such as:
6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control and hill hold assist
Tyre pressure monitoring system
Halogen headlamps
Digital instrument cluster
14-inch steel wheels with wheelcaps
Manual AC
Manually-adjustable ORVMs
Tilt and Telescopic adjustable steering
Front power windows
Front USB Type-C charger
Sunglass holder

This renewed trim of the i20 gets a basic feature list that covers all the essentials needed, and some fancier equipment like a fully digital instrument cluster and a sunglass holder. However, otherwise it feels quite barebones, and this factor will limit its appeal.
Do note that the Era variant is only available in the Petrol MT combination.
Besides this, the carmaker has also added an electric sunroof to the Magna variant, to make the i20 more attractive.

Along with these changes, Hyundai also announced the launch of a new dealer-fit accessory in the form of a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and a reverse parking camera at a price of Rs 14,999. This could prove to be very popular amongst buyers of these three lower variants, given that they don’t come equipped with one from the factory.
Credited with creating the premium hatchback segment more than 15 years back, Hyundai’s i20 offers a high-quality interior, refined powertrains and a sleek design language.

Equipment-wise, higher variants of the i20 feature a voice-enabled electric sunroof, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless charger, height-adjustable driver seat, 7-speaker BOSE sound system, cruise control and drive modes. They also get safety equipment such as 6 airbags, hill hold assist, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear view camera and reverse parking sensors.

Under the hood, the i20 is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which comes mated to 5-speed manual and CVT gearbox options. Here are the detailed specifications of the hatchback:
|
Engine |
1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol |
|
Transmission |
5-speed manual/CVT automatic |
|
Power (PS) |
83 PS (MT)/ 88 PS (CVT) |
|
Torque (Nm) |
115 Nm |

The i20 faces competition from other premium hatchbacks like the Maruti Baleno, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza.
The lower price of the i20 is likely to bring it back into the shortlist of many buyers and could see better footfalls in Hyundai showrooms. However, the base Era variant remains quite barebones, and we suggest buyers to instead upgrade to the Magna variant if the budget permits.
