This Dodge Challenger Is The Poppins Candy Of Cars

• The paint wrap option is offered in the US market to celebrate the Challenger’s final production year. 

• Harks back to a 1970 advertisement showing all colour options on the same car.

• Such creative wraps are not offered by car manufacturers in India. 

• Wrapping a car is legal in India as long as the new shade is updated in RTO records. 

If you didn’t know, the iconic Dodge Challenger muscle car is entering the last year of production in 2023. As a tribute, Dodge has collaborated with a company called CG Detroit to offer a unique vinyl wrap that features all 14 colours that are available on the 2023 Challenger.

The long, sleek Challenger with paint stripes reminds us of a Poppins candy roll from childhood. Such manufacturer-supported wraps are not available in India yet, so let’s take a closer look at the the ‘paint chip’ wrap. 

Where did Dodge get the idea for a multicoloured car?

Back in 1970, Dodge’s sister company Plymouth put out a brochure for its now-iconic Barracuda muscle car. In the section where the colour options of the car were listed, the company creatively put all colours in the form of stripes on the same car.

The ‘paint chip’ Barracuda came to life much more recently when a petrolhead in the USA, Tim Wellborn, restored his car with a ‘paint chip’ colour scheme on one side. Of course, the Barracuda is a highly valuable collectible, so the paint stripes have been put over a transparent wrap, only on one side of the car. 

This ‘paint chip’ ‘Cuda is said to be the inspiration for the Dodge Challenger’s new wrap option. While the Barracuda had a whopping 25 paint options, the 2023 Challenger isn’t far behind with 14 different shades on offer.

Wrapping as a form of creative expression 

For petrolheads, a car is like an open canvas ripe for experimentation and expression. Aftermarket vinyls offer a wide variety of options that go far beyond the colour pallette offered by most manufacturers.

The ‘paint chip’ wrap is available to buy aftermarket in the US at the Indian currency equivalent of Rs 3.06 lakh. Given that it’s only available for a limited time, the wrap is sure to make any stock Challenger collectible.
