Tamil Nadu Government Announces Range Of Incentives For EVs

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has released the State’s Electric Vehicle Policy for 2023

The government of Tamil Nadu has a range of plans in a bid to aid and accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in the State. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin released the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023, which outlines various provisions the government plans to undertake.

As per the policy, the government will promote Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Salem and Tirunelveli as pilot cities to implement electric mobility solutions. Additionally, building and construction laws will be amended to ensure charging infrastructure is integrated in the initial stages for all new constructions in these cities.

Incentives will be offered for charging and battery swapping stations, conversion of ICE powered commercial vehicles and the power tariffs for public charging stations will also be revised. Furthermore, commercial vehicles ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10 lakh will also be accompanied by incentives.

The Tamil Nadu government has also decided to waive road tax, registration charges and permit costs for electric vehicles. As per the policy, this includes battery electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in electric vehicles (PEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and strong hybrid electric vehicles (SHEV).

In addition to all the above, the policy also outlines various investment interests and employment potential in the electric vehicles industry within the State. The government has also announced a slew of incentives and reimbursements for companies involved in EV projects, and companies planning to diversify into EV manufacturing.
