Expert's Opinion on Aera
- The Matter Aera 5000 is a geared electric motorcycle, making it a very unique offering
- With the Aera, Matter aims to blend the thrill of manual gear shifting with the efficiency of an electric vehicle
- It offers a one-of-a-kind riding experience and is priced between Rs 1.83 lakh and Rs 1.93 lakh (ex-showroom prices)
- It is a sharp looking naked bike
- It gets LED lighting all around with a projector headlamp
- Dynamic indicators at the front integrated into the tank area
- Five colour options to choose from including Cosmic Black, Cosmic Blue, Glacier White, Blaze Red and Nord Grey
- To highlight the main feature (gearbox), it also gets a transparent clutch cover
- Design of the headlight unit might not be to everyone's liking
- Fit and finish levels are not premium especially when you consider the price
- The Matter Aera becomes the first geared electric motorcycle on offer in India
- Gets three riding modes and a four-speed gearbox, giving riders 12 different riding combinations
- The acceleration is smooth and it has a top-speed of approximately 105kmph
- Once the clutch is engaged and the gear is selected, it can be released fully without the bike starting to move forward like a conventional ICE
- Even when coming to a halt while in gear, the clutch does not need to be engaged, making it convenient to ride
- It offers a real-world riding range of around 125kms, making it ample for daily commutes
- The long travel of the gear lever while shifting makes shifts feel time consuming
- If neutral is engaged while coming to a halt, getting it back into first gear might require a rider to move the bike slightly forward
- Because of the torquey nature of this EV, shifting gears does feel like it breaks the momentum of the quick acceleration
- While it does have a kerb weight of 168kg, it does not feel very heavy on the go
- It does feel stable while riding in the city and on the highway, thanks to a fatter rear tyre
- The tyres do not feel confidence-inspiring while riding on wet roads
- The overall weight distribution does not make the handling feel sharp and sporty
- The seat has firm padding making it comfortable for slightly longer commutes
- The pillion seat is also fairly large and the grab handles are easy to hold
- Riders who have a height of 5’7 will be able to flat foot to the ground, thanks to the 790mm seat height
- The bike does feel a little wide between a riders legs owing to the battery pack
- Lighter riders might find the rear suspension a little too stiff for their liking
- The rearview mirrors do not offer a good field of view
- It makes use of a 7-inch TFT touchscreen unit where the information is laid out well
- The navigation feature works really well
- It gets a keyfob for keyless entry
- The touchscreen TFT feels smooth and can even be used while wearing riding gloves
- Ride telemetry and more information is easily available on the Matter application
- Gets single channel ABS but at this price point, dual-channel ABS would have been a nice addition
- The Matter Aera is a geared electric motorcycle, offering a unique riding experience
- It offers similar performance to that of a 150-180cc ICE motorcycle
- There are two variants on offer with a price difference of around Rs 10,500
- The price of the bike does make it a bit premium, but it offers ample features
- Considering the unique riding experience and the price sensitive market, it might be too expensive for the average customer
- An electric motorcycle does not really need a gearbox so what needs to be seen is how many people are interested in an EV with gears
- Riders that want the functionality of having gears in an electric format should test ride the motorcycle before making a purchase
- The Matter Aera is a good motorcycle to ride but we would like to see what it would be capable of without a gearbox too
Pros and Cons of Aera
- Aggressive looks
- Punchy motor and performance, especially in Sport mode
- Is engaging
- Good handling
- Feature-loaded but easy-to-use touchscreen TFT console
- Comfortable ergonomics
- Spacious front storage compartment
- Gearbox somewhat hampers the overall riding experience
- Misses out on hill hold
- Quite pricey
The Matter Aera is fun to ride with its engaging performance and sporty handling, but the gearbox hampers the overall riding experience for those looking for an authentic EV riding experience. Combine that with the steep Rs 1.74 lakh price for the base variant means the Aera can be a bit hard to recommend
