Volvo EX30 vs Mini Cooper SE: Premium Entry-level EVs Go Head-to-Head

Volvo is all set to bring the EX30 to India in the coming weeks. Featuring a more modern design language, the EX30 will serve as Volvo’s entry-level electric offering in our market. Meanwhile, Mini is also expected to launch the updated Cooper SE, which will fall in a similar price bracket as the EX30. 

In this read, we compare the EX30 with the Cooper SE to see which might suit your preferences. Do note that for this comparison, we are referring to the global-spec Cooper SE, as full India-specific details are yet to be revealed.

Price

The Volvo EX30 is expected to be priced from around Rs 50 lakh. This makes it a slightly more accessible option compared to the Mini Cooper SE, which could be priced closer to Rs 55 lakh. Although exact pricing may differ, once they are launched. Both models also sit in the premium EV space, with the Cooper SE leaning towards its hot hatch appeal, while the EX30 comes across as a crossover-type EV.

Dimensions

In terms of size, the Volvo EX30 is clearly the larger EV when compared with the Mini Cooper SE. It measures 375 mm longer and 82 mm wider, which could translate into more cabin space and a stronger road presence. The taller stance also suggests better headroom, making it a more practical alternative to the upcoming Cooper SE. 

Features

For this comparison, we have picked the global model of the Cooper SE, as the features for the India-spec version are yet to be confirmed. On the other hand, most of the EX30’s features are already confirmed, which you can learn more about in our first-drive review here.

Both EVs bring a premium set of features, with interiors that focus on minimalism. For instance, neither offers a traditional instrument cluster, aiming instead for a clean and uncluttered cabin space. 

That said, the EX30 comes with a larger 12.3-inch infotainment system, while the Mini Cooper SE boasts a smaller 9.45-inch setup. However, the Cooper SE features a heads-up display, which is missing on the EX30. In terms of convenience, both EVs offer tech like wireless phone charging and powered seats, though the EX30 adds a fixed panoramic glass roof for improved cabin ambience. 

In terms of safety, both EVs are equipped with multiple airbags, a 360-degree camera, and include ADAS features. 

Powertrain

The Volvo EX30, in its India-spec version, comes only with a rear-wheel-drive setup. Its electric motor produces 272PS and 343Nm, with 0–100 kmph acceleration in 5.3 seconds. The EX30 will be offered with a 69kWh battery pack, which delivers a WLTP-claimed range of 480 km.

In contrast, the upcoming Mini Cooper SE is expected to feature a smaller 36.6kWh battery pack paired with a 184PS electric motor. Globally, the Cooper SE offers a claimed range of around 298km, which is lower than that of the EX30.

Between the two, the Volvo EX30 comes across as the more practical option. It offers a bigger battery, longer claimed range, and stronger performance figures. Although the pricing of both models is yet to be confirmed, since both are expected to fall under the Rs 60 lakh bracket, the EX30 also turns out to be the more accessible option.

That said, the Mini Cooper SE’s sporty hatchback appeal may attract its loyalists, while its smaller footprint could be preferred by buyers who want a more compact EV. It may also bring a couple of feature additions, such as a heads-up display, though final details will only be clear after its official launch.
