From the facelifted Tiago facelift to the premium Altroz, here are five hatchbacks that we are eagerly waiting to see on our roads in 2020

With most of this year done, and not too many launches planned for the rest of 2019, it is time to start looking at all the cars we will see being introduced to the Indian market during or after Auto Expo 2020. We’ve already listed the top five SUVs that are scheduled for a 2020 debut. Popular as they might be at the moment, we are a country of hatchback lovers and owners. And the hatchback choices will definitely expand soon. So whether you are interested in a more premium Maruti Suzuki Wagon R in the form of the XL5, or Honda’s latest reveal, the new Jazz, fresh off its Tokyo Motor Show debut, this list has you covered. Here are our top five hatchback picks launching in 2020:

2020 Honda Jazz:

The next-gen Honda Jazz has been revealed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. It is slated to launch in India after the Auto Expo 2020. The 2020 Jazz comes with a softer design that looks familiar thanks to its tall-boy profile. It comes with a minimalistic styled dashboard and packs upmarket features like digital dials and connected-car tech. While the fourth-gen Jazz debuts the carmaker’s new dual-motor hybrid powertrain, the India-spec model is likely to retain its 1.2-litre i-VTEC and 1.5-litre i-DTEC engines. Expect it to be priced more than the current model, which is priced from Rs 7.46 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tata Altroz:

The Altroz was supposed to launch in September but due to some reasons, it has been postponed to January 2020.  The Altroz was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and the first impressions are positive. Spy shots confirm that the India-spec Altroz comes with premium features like ambient lighting, floating touchscreen infotainment and cruise control. It will be powered by two petrol powertrains and one diesel engine and is expected to be fun-to-drive as Tata Motors released a teaser of the Altroz doing stringent handling tests. Prices for the Altroz are expected to be in the range of Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Hyundai i20 is set to get a generation update and the third-gen model is slated to launch by mid 2020. Spied testing overseas, the 2020 i20 comes with sharper looks. It is also expected to come with Hyundai’s latest party piece, the BlueLink connected-car tech. Powertrain options for the upcoming model include the Venue’s 1.2-litre Kappa, 1.0-litre T-GDI petrol engines as well as the Seltos’ 1.5-litre CRDI unit. All three engines will be BS6-compliant. Expect the upcoming model to be priced at par or a shade above the current model’s Rs 5.53 lakh price tag.

Maruti Suzuki XL5:

The Maruti Suzuki XL5 is a premium hatchback that’s based on the Wagon R and will be retailed via its premium Nexa outlets. The XL5 is expected to get premium bits like LED headlamps, LED tail lamps and blacked-out alloy wheels. Inside, it could get an all-black cabin and could get features like automatic climate control and headlamps. Suspected engine option for the XL5 is the BS6-compliant 1.2-litre K12B engine that develops 83PS and 113Nm. The XL5 is expected to debut at the Auto Expo 2020 and is likely to be priced more than the Wagon R’s Rs 4.34 lakh.

Tata Tiago Facelift:

The Tiago, one of Tata’s successful hatchbacks, is set to get a facelift. It features an Altroz-like face thanks to the raked grille and sharp headlamps. The profile and rear-end of the hatchback are expected to be identical. Inside, changes are expected to be limited to a new colour scheme. Under the hood, the facelifted Tiago will come with the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol motor, albeit upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms. Meanwhile, the diesel engine will not be upgraded and will face the axe. Expect the Tiago facelift to debut at the Auto Expo 2020 with a price tag more than the current model’s Rs 4.40 lakh.
