All you need to know about the media event and what to expect

  • The Group Night is a media event where VW presents its plans and previews some of its products.
  • Audi will launch the A8L in India tomorrow and it is likely to be showcased at the Group Night.
  • SUVs from Skoda and Volkswagen could break cover at the event as well.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) plans to hold its first Volkswagen Group Night tomorrow in New Delhi ahead of Auto Expo 2020. The Audi A8L will be launched at the event and VW, Skoda, and Porsche are likely to showcase at least one upcoming car each. Skoda may preview the Vision IN and a similar Volkswagen SUV could be shown. Porsche could give India its first look at the Taycan. We could also get a glimpse of the company’s future plans part of the India 2.0 project.

In October, SAVWIPL had said in a press release that it will present a specific outlook for the models under the India 2.0 plan at the Expo. We know that VW has four SUVs lined up for the Expo and Skoda has five models in the pipeline. In addition, we also expect to see the carmaker’s new logo and corporate identity at Auto Expo.

The Group Night is an event where the media is invited for a presentation from the company. Last year, VW held a Group Night ahead of the Geneva Motor Show where it showcased the ID.3 vehicle.

Audi recently launched the Q8 SUV, and tomorrow the carmaker is bringing back the A8L full-size luxury sedan. It will stir up old rivalries with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. Audi will launch the most advanced autonomous vehicle in India at the media night event.

We expect a glimpse of Skoda’s Vision IN SUV for India. We have seen drawings of the exterior and interior, plus a video teaser. The Vision IN could be Skoda’s most affordable SUV in India and a production version is expected to arrive in 2021.

Volkswagen India is also working on an SUV based on the MQB-A0-IN platform. We expect the final SUV to be inspired by the T-Cross SUV sold in other countries. However, Volkswagen may also preview an electric vehicle such as the ID.3 ahead of the Expo.

The Porsche Taycan could break cover in India tomorrow. It will be the first all-electric luxury sports sedan in the country. With a range in excess of 400km in top-spec trim, the Taycan is a Tesla rival. It is likely to be a pricey and exquisite tech package. Plus, it will look like nothing else when on the road.

Volkswagen’s Group Night is a precursor to the media days at the Expo. It gives the carmaker an opportunity to showcase its ideology through select products. At a Group Night last year, the carmaker had showcased the ID Buggy, a zero-emission vehicle based on the Beetle-based beach buggy. We can’t wait to see what the carmaker has to show this year.
