  • Powered by 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines with manual and automatic transmission options.

  • Bookings are open for a token price of Rs 21,000 and deliveries will begin from November 1.

  • Will take on the upcoming Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.

Not even four days since the launch of the next generation Mahindra Thar and it's already off to a flying start. The carmaker has revealed that the off-roader has already crossed over 9,000 bookings so far despite test drive models being limited to only 18 cities. It has also garnered over 36,000 enquiries and more than 3.3 lakh website visitors so far. Deliveries are set to commence on November 1.

The Mahindra Thar is priced from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom), and is offered in AX, AX Opt and LX trims spread out across three body styles: a fixed soft top, a cabriolet and a fixed hard top. It sports a Jeep Wrangler-esque design philosophy aside from the different front grille. Other highlights include LED DRLs, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED tail lamps.

Inside, the new Thar comes loaded with features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, off-road stats, roof mounted speakers, cruise control, electronic AC, steering mounted audio controls, power windows and keyless entry. Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control and a roll cage are some of the safety kit on offer.

Under the hood, the Thar is powered by a  2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel motor. The former pushes out 150PS and 300Nm (320Nm in AT) while the latter delivers 130PS and 300Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. What the Thar is really known for is its off-road nature. Naturally, it runs on a 4X4 drivetrain with a low range transfer case, mechanical differential for the rear axle and a brake locking diff.

Bookings are currently open for a token amount of Rs 21,000 which can be done either online or at authorised Mahindra dealerships. The carmaker will add another 100 cities for Thar test drives by October 10, which will extend to the rest of the country by October 15.  While it currently doesn’t have a rival, it will have the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha to compete with once both off-roaders are launched.
