KTM’s New Two-Stroke Fuel Injection System Makes The Motor Cooler Than Ever!

KTM has finally and officially revealed its mooted fuel injection technology for its two-stroke motorcycles. It seems that KTM engineers have finally figured out to make the technology work in a two-stroke motor for the very first time. The new engine will be bolted to the Austrian bikemaker’s 2018 MX/enduro bike lineup and is dubbed as ‘Transfer Port Injection’ (TPI) in KTM terms. 

Speaking of the bikes, the KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI will be the first ones to boast this technology when they make their global debut in May 2017. A third model, named the KTM 250 XC-W TPI, is also expected to follow but only for select markets. 

According to KTM, the fuel-injection technology improves on the fuel-economy front and has also eliminated the need for pre-mixing oil and fuel, which was one of the biggest drawbacks of a two-stroke engine. The company has also pointed out that the new technology will alleviate the riding experience provided by a two-stroke motorcycle, thanks to increased power and the way it is delivered now.

Elaborating on the subject, KTM’s product marketing manager, Joachim Saur said: “This is an incredibly exciting development for KTM. We have been developing two-stroke fuel injection for some time and our goal was to create competitive motorcycles with all the benefits of fuel injection, while fitting into our READY TO RACE mantra.”

Explaining about the testing and development for the project, Saur commented: “There has been extensive testing and considerations for our Research and Development team to take into account during this process, so we are very motivated by this next step and world-first in technology, as we take a major step forward in this segment.”

Speaking of the bikes, he said: “We are certainly looking forward to unveiling the new 2018 KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI machines in May. In Europe, the bikes will arrive at the dealer floors in early summer, and in the U.S. and Canada, the new 2018 250 XC-W TPI will be available in very limited quantities in late fall.”

As far as India is concerned, KTM offers a whole range of its MX/enduro bikes here, so there's a good chance that the Austrian might offer this new tech as well, however, certainly after its global launch. Moreover, even if these bikes are not launched at the earliest, I am quite sure that one can work around a way to get the bikes imported here, thanks to the vast KTM network in the country.
