Hero just might develop an electric scooter with the know-how it gained bank-rolling Ather

  • We guess the two trademarks might spawn two new scooters.
  • The electric scooter will be Hero’s first offering in the future mobility space.
  • Expect the Hero products to be competitively priced.
  • Looking ahead at newer products, Hero has trademarked two names: Connect and Freedo. The first one was filed by Hero InvestCorp while the latter was filed by Hero MotoCorp. Given that Pavan Munjal is at the helm of both of these companies, these names are likely to be used on future Hero scooters. And one of them could be electric.

Starting off with the Connect, the name does indicate an electric scooter. Hero has been an active backer of Ather Energy, who has been developing cutting edge electric scooters for the past couple of years. It might just be more mass market-oriented than the premium and sporty Ather 450. Expect the Connect to have connected AI features and lithium-ion battery tech, probably not-swappable.

The Freedo is where things get confusing for us. Hero could use this name on a 110cc scooter which could replace the Maestro Edge, like it did with the Duet. The 125cc scooter derived from the Duet was called the Destini 125. A similar fate could be in store as the Maestro Edge name could be kept for the 125cc scooter with Freedo being employed for a new 110cc scooter.

Another likelihood is that Hero could be keeping the name for an upcoming motorcycle in the 150cc-160cc space. The Hero Achiever did not quite hit the mark, with competitors outselling it by a considerable margin. And the Xtreme Sports is a defunct product. Hence, this new motorcycle could mark the entry of Hero’s new contender in the segment.

We expect to hear more on these two names by the end of the year. If not a prototype, Hero might showcase some concept two-wheeler at EICMA later this year, which could bear one of these trademarked names.
