A lot of tech and automobile manufacturers are working to lay the foundations of the future of the automotive industry by developing self-driving electric vehicles (EVs). Being one of them, tech giant Google has recently announced the renaming of its self-driving car company – the Google Self-Driving Car Project – to Waymo. The name 'Waymo' stands for ‘a new way forward in mobility’. This company comes under the multinational tech conglomerate, Alphabet Inc.
There have been a lot of prototypes of the self-driving cars that Google has been testing since 2009 and the driving time of these models now equals 300 years of driving time on the roads. Google also stated in an official release that tired, drunk or distracted driving is a leading cause for the 1.2 million lives lost on the roads every year and that its endeavour as a carmaker will be to ensure better and safer motoring.
Now, since these cars will have autonomous driving technology, chances are, the passengers will not require any kind of licence to be driven around in the cars. This technology will be very helpful for the elderly and disabled. Driving this point home, Google completed the world’s first fully self-driven car ride on October 20, 2015, with a blind man as the passenger.
This initiative by Google will help change the experience of car ownership (since the driving will be done by the car). It’ll also hopefully mean much safer roads with fewer accidents and easy mobility. Stay tuned for more information.
