Complete Breakdown: GST Cuts and Their Impact on Every Mass-Market Car

As you might already be aware, car buyers in India have a reason to celebrate! With the latest GST reductions, prices of mass-market cars have dropped across segments, making ownership more affordable than ever. From entry-level hatchbacks to popular subcompact SUVs, the new tax structure offers significant savings to buyers, reducing the financial burden while increasing overall demand.

While the luxury car segment in India is growing multifold, a major chunk of cars are still mass-market, under the Rs 30 lakh segment. And in fact, these smaller cars benefit the most from the updated GST numbers.

So in this article, we break down the prices, letting you know exactly how much you can save on mass-market cars under Rs 30 lakh, and which models of different carmakers benefit the most.  

Before starting, do note that the price reduction mentioned below is the maximum reduction that is offered on a particular model. The exact number could differ based on the variant you choose. 

Tata

Firstly, kudos to Tata for being the first automaker to let buyers enjoy full benefits from the revised GST structure. The popular Nexon has gotten even more attractive with massive price cuts, while the Harrier and Safari also seem to be much more desirable now. 

Kia 

So Kia has gone ahead with full benefits to customers, with the Syros attracting the most reduction of up to Rs 1.86 lakh. The GST cuts also make the Sonet and Syros feel like a more value-for-money SUV when compared to the Seltos, which, in comparison, doesn’t get as much price reduction as the former. If you are planning to get the top-spec Carens Clavis, then you get almost Rs 80,000 reduction here as well. 

Mahindra

Benefitting from its sub-4-metre size and small engine options, the XUV 3XO takes away the most benefits. The good thing is that the prices of all Mahindra cars have been reduced by over a lakh! The Scorpio Classic gets the least benefit, but the amount is still significant. The updated prices are applicable from September 6 onwards, so you need not wait till September 22.

Hyundai 

As seen in the table above, the Venue and Venue N Line get the most benefits, followed by the 20 N Line. Potential Verna buyers might be a little unhappy after looking at the overall price reduction of the sedan in comparison with other models. 

Maruti Suzuki

Maruti is yet to reveal the updated prices of its Nexa cars, but has revealed the reduced prices of its Arena models. The GST reductions give the Swift and Dzire the most benefit, while the Brezza and Ertiga miss out on a more significant price cut since their engines are above 1.2-litre in size. 

Toyota

The Fortuner and Hycross don’t really fall under Rs 30 lakh, but since they are so popular among the masses, we thought we should include them. Under Rs 20 lakh, the Taisor becomes a great choice with a massive price cut of Rs 1.11 lakh. Under Rs 30 lakh, the diesel-powered Crysta becomes an interesting option after the reduction of Rs 1.81 lakh on its ex-showroom price.  

Do note that while Maruti has not yet disclosed the benefits you will get with the Baleno and Fronx, we expect it to be similar to that of the Glanza and Taisor. 

Honda 

The Elevate and City both get over Rs 50,000 in price reduction. It is the entry-level Amaze that benefits the most with more than 95,000 price reduction. 

Renault

Both Kwid and Triber recently got an update that further enhanced the overall package. Now with GST cuts of about Rs 80,000 on the Triber and around Rs 96,000 on the Kiger, both these cars seem even more appealing. The entry-level Kwid has also gotten more affordable by Rs 55,095. 

Nissan 

Nissan’s only product in India (apart from the lacklustre X-Trail), the Magnite, has been made more affordable by up to Rs 1 lakh, and seems to be a compelling option, keeping in mind that its prices were competitive even before the price cuts. Nissan is yet to reveal the updated prices of the X-Trail.

Skoda 

The Kylaq benefits from its length of under 4 metres and a 1-litre engine, ensuring a significant price reduction of up to almost Rs 1.2 lakh for the top-spec Prestige trim. The Slavia and Kushaq are now more affordable by around Rs 60,000. The launch of the Kylaq had already decreased the monthly sales of the Kushaq, and we now expect buyers to shift towards the Kylaq even more, considering the benefits that it attracts. 

Volkswagen 

Price reduction of both Taigun and Virtus is similar to that of the Slavia and Kushaq, as they are underpinned by the same platform and share many components. The top-spec variants of the Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun get a reduction of over 65,000.

MG

Like most compact SUVs, the Astor sees a price reduction of slightly over Rs 50,000. The Hector, on the other hand, gets more accessible by almost Rs 1.5 lakh. 

A Win-win

The latest GST cuts mark a significant win for both car buyers and the automobile industry. For customers, it means more value-for-money and easier access to popular models, while manufacturers benefit from increased demand. 

The higher benefits made available on smaller cars will also mean that buyers might consider opting for a fully-loaded variant of a smaller car rather than a top-spec variant of a car from a segment above. This can be understood by the example of the Hyundai Creta and Venue. Someone who was considering the mid-spec Creta for Rs 15 lakh might now consider getting the Venue in its fully-loaded guise, as the smaller car attracts around 70,000 more price reduction, and that’s a lot of money for an average middle-class buyer.
